The 2030 Commonwealth Games will lead in sustainability and accessibility, according to Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who outlined Ahmedabad’s vision for hosting the centenary edition of the multi-sport event. Scheduled to take place in 2030, the Games will mark the return of the Commonwealth Games to India after 20 years, with the last edition hosted in New Delhi in 2010. Sanghavi said Ahmedabad already possesses most of the infrastructure required to stage the event, requiring only around 20% refurbishment of existing facilities.
The city also plans to make public transport fully electric, create accessible infrastructure for para athletes, and ensure that investments leave a lasting legacy for sports development, urban mobility and sustainability.
Ahmedabad Aims to Set New Standards for Sustainability
Sanghavi emphasized that environmental sustainability will be a defining feature of the 2030 Games.
- He noted that Gujarat is India’s largest producer of green energy, providing a strong foundation for hosting a low-carbon sporting event.
- One of the key commitments is transitioning Ahmedabad’s public transport system to 100% electric operations by 2030.
- Currently, nearly 90% of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fleet is electric, with the remaining fleet expected to be electrified before the Games begin.
The focus on renewable energy and clean mobility is expected to reduce emissions while improving the overall experience for athletes, officials and spectators.

Accessibility for Para Athletes Remains a Top Priority
A major highlight of Ahmedabad’s preparations is its commitment to creating one of the most accessible Commonwealth Games in history.
According to Sanghavi, hotels across the city are already being upgraded to improve accessibility for para athletes. The objective is to make every aspect of the games, from accommodation and transportation to sporting venues, fully inclusive.
He said Ahmedabad aims to establish a new benchmark for hosting international sporting events that prioritize accessibility alongside world-class infrastructure.

- Sports infrastructure expansion is expected to be completed by late 2028 or early 2029, allowing adequate time for testing and operational readiness.
- He also highlighted that the city’s existing hotel capacity has been developed using a sustainable model, while metro services and BRT routes already connect major sporting venues.
- Beyond the Games, newly upgraded stadiums will be used to train young athletes and promote sports science, while athlete accommodation will later serve as student hostels, creating lasting community benefits.

Cricket Discussions Continue
While the sporting programme is still being finalized, Sanghavi confirmed that Gujarat would like to see cricket included in the 2030 Commonwealth Games. However, he noted that the final decision rests with Commonwealth Sport, and discussions remain ongoing.
Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadlier also confirmed that officials are working closely with Indian authorities regarding optional and additional sports for the Games.
With strong backing from both the Central Government and the Government of Gujarat, alongside expected private sector participation, the 2030 Commonwealth Games will lead in sustainability and accessibility by combining green infrastructure, inclusive design and long-term urban development. If these commitments are fully realized, Ahmedabad could establish a new global benchmark for hosting sustainable and accessible international sporting events.
