China’s overseas renewable energy plant is being described as one of the biggest clean energy projects ever proposed outside a country’s own borders. In Xinjiang, China, a 3.5 GW solar plant was connected to the grid in 2024, spread across 32,947 acres and expected to generate about 6.09 billion kWh of electricity annually. The Midong project also features more than 5.26 million solar panels, showing the scale China can already execute.

  • Coal transition remains active: In 2026, China Energy Investment Corporation is also expected to focus on stabilizing coal supply and upgrading coal-fired power plants, with related investment accounting for roughly 30% of the group’s total.
  • Ultra-high voltage transmission: China is continuing to develop ultra-high voltage transmission lines that can move electricity across several thousand miles with low losses.
