Work out roughly how much greenhouse gas your life produces in a year, and see which part of it actually matters. The calculator runs entirely in your browser: nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is stored.

Fill in what you know and leave the rest at zero. Even rough numbers from an electricity bill and a week of travel give you a useful picture, because footprints are usually dominated by two or three things rather than spread evenly.

Where you live
Home energy is shared out between everyone living there.
Home energy
Take it from your bill. A typical Indian home uses 200-300; a US home about 900.
Standard 14.2 kg domestic cylinder. Leave at 0 if you cook on electricity.
Only if your home is connected to a gas line.
Getting around
All the driving you do, including trips someone else drives you on.
Sharing a ride splits the emissions between you.
Flights each year
Roughly 1,200 km there and back.
Up to about 3,000 km there and back, e.g. India to the Gulf.
About 12,000 km there and back, e.g. India to Europe or the US.
Food and shopping
How this is calculated

Everything below is per person per year, in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e), which counts methane and nitrous oxide alongside carbon dioxide. Home energy is divided by the number of people living with you. This is an estimate meant for comparison and for deciding what to change, not an audit.

Reading your result

The world average is about 4.7 tonnes of CO₂e per person per year. India averages near 2 tonnes, the United Kingdom about 6.5 and the United States close to 15. The figure that matters most is the 2.3 tonnes per person that the 1.5 °C pathway implies for 2030 — the line the comparison chart marks.

Two patterns show up for almost everyone. Flying is lumpy: a single long-haul return trip can outweigh a year of careful choices everywhere else. Home electricity depends as much on where you live as on what you do, because a kilowatt-hour in France carries a tenth of the emissions of one in India or South Africa.
