The Uttar Pradesh government has made a historic commitment to assist religious organizations in implementing environmentally friendly practices as part of the Mahakumbh Declaration on Climate Change. This program includes the installation of solar panels, enhancements in waste management, energy, and water conservation, and afforestation efforts to assist temples, mosques, gurdwaras, churches, and other religious organizations in their transition to renewable energy.

These organizations will install rainwater harvesting systems, prohibit single-use plastics on their property, and create green areas surrounding places of worship in an effort to lessen their environmental impact. Their overall carbon footprint will be reduced as a result of these actions.

Climate and Environmental Education for Religious Institutions

Manoj Kumar Singh, the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh, announced on February 16 at the nation’s first-ever Conference on Faith and Climate Change, which was held in Prayagraj alongside the Maha Kumbh. At the event, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reaffirmed the government’s commitment to incorporating sustainability into religious endeavors.

The government will also implement climate and environmental education initiatives for faith-based organizations and religious centers as part of the plan. To ensure that sustainability principles are upheld during significant gatherings and festivals, a set of guidelines for organizing environmentally responsible religious events will also be published.

Engaging Faith Leaders in Climate Action

The importance of the effort was emphasized by Chandra Bhushan, CEO of iFOREST, the knowledge partner for the conference. He pointed out that this is the first concerted attempt in India to engage religious figures in environmental conservation.

He noted that faith affects billions of people globally and that a grassroots movement for climate action could be sparked if religious festivals and sermons continuously stressed sustainability. The Mahakumbh Declaration on Climate Change is one of the most significant steps in encouraging religious congregations to practice environmental stewardship.
