Residents say the persistent humming has disrupted daily life, affected sleep, and reduced property enjoyment, raising broader questions about how communities can coexist with the next generation of AI infrastructure.

Residents Claim Constant Noise Has Become Unbearable

The lawsuit was filed by three residents of Sturtevant, a village adjacent to Mount Pleasant, alleging that the data centre creates “unreasonable and excessive noise” that amounts to private nuisance and negligence.

According to the complaint, the sound comes from several pieces of equipment, including:

  • Diesel generators that provide backup power during outages.
  • HVAC systems used to cool thousands of AI servers operating around the clock.
  • Cooling towers, air-handling units, chillers, and condenser fans that help prevent overheating inside the facility.

Residents argue that Microsoft failed to install adequate acoustic barriers or other noise-reduction measures that could have minimized the impact on nearby homes.

Residents Describe Continuous Mechanical Noise

Several local residents say the issue extends well beyond occasional construction activity.

One homeowner reportedly described two years of construction noise, followed by a continuous mechanical hum operating 24 hours a day, comparing it to the sound of a freight train engine. Another resident said the noise continues throughout the day and night, making it difficult to sleep.

In a separate incident reported from southwest Michigan, a resident measured sound from a nearby data centre at approximately 60 decibels while standing on his porch. Although this measurement was not taken at Microsoft’s Wisconsin facility, it illustrates the kind of persistent environmental noise that has become a growing concern around large-scale data centres.

Microsoft Says It Has Taken Steps to Reduce Noise

The lawsuit against Microsoft’s US AI data centre over noise concerns comes despite Microsoft’s claims that it has already implemented mitigation measures.

  • In updates published on its official blog, the company acknowledged investigating a tonal humming sound, identifying cooling fans operating at high speed as one of the primary sources.
  • Microsoft says it introduced several noise-reduction measures in mid-April and conducted independent monitoring.
  • According to the company, some neighboring residents confirmed that the changes significantly reduced the humming sound.

A company spokesperson also stated that Microsoft remains “committed to being a good neighbour in the communities where we build, own, and operate our data centres.

Local Officials Say Complaints Have Declined

Village officials in Mount Pleasant have indicated they have received fewer complaints since Microsoft introduced its mitigation measures.

According to village communications director Sean Ryan, officials continue monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond if additional concerns arise. He emphasized that the village expects Microsoft to remain a responsible corporate neighbor as development continues.

However, the newly filed lawsuit suggests not all residents believe the issue has been fully resolved.

AI Growth Is Bringing New Community Challenges

The dispute reflects a broader trend emerging across the United States as technology companies rapidly expand AI infrastructure.

Modern AI data centres require enormous computing power, constant cooling, reliable electricity, and extensive backup systems. While these facilities are essential for supporting cloud computing, generative AI, and digital services, they also raise concerns about noise pollution, water consumption, electricity demand, and environmental impacts, particularly when located close to residential neighborhoods.

Microsoft’s plans to develop up to 15 data centres in Mount Pleasant have further intensified local concerns about how expanding AI infrastructure could affect nearby communities over the long term.
