A landslide in Pune buries houses, triggering massive traffic on the Mumbai-Pune expressway after relentless monsoon rains battered Maharashtra overnight, causing hillsides to give way and disrupting one of India’s busiest transport corridors. The landslide struck Patan village in Pune’s Maval taluka early Monday, burying multiple homes and triggering a large-scale rescue operation. Officials fear 30 to 35  people may be trapped beneath the debris and report two dead. At the same time, heavy rainfall, flooding, and fresh landslide risks forced authorities to suspend traffic on both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway, urging people to avoid non-essential travel.

The incident comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to warn of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and parts of Pune district.

Rescue Teams Rush to Landslide Site

• The landslide occurred in the early hours after continuous rain loosened the hillside in the remote village of Patan.
• According to police, three separate landslides were reported in the Maval region, with one of them engulfing a house believed to have three occupants inside.
• Officials said around five houses were affected when a section of the hill collapsed.
• A 30-member team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), based in Pune, was immediately deployed to assist local authorities in search and rescue operations.

Emergency teams are working carefully due to unstable ground and the possibility of further landslides.

Expressway Traffic Comes to a Standstill

The Pune landslide incident also brought traffic to a halt across the region.

Authorities suspended vehicle movement on both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old highway in both directions after heavy rain caused flooding, reduced visibility, and increased the risk of additional landslides.

Police advised commuters to postpone unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve and official updates are issued.

The disruption also affected the recently opened 13-kilometer Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link, which passes through the Sahyadri hills. Opened just two months ago, the new stretch was designed to shorten travel by around 6 kilometers and reduce journey times by 25 to 30 minutes.

• The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has warned residents to prepare for persistent rain, strong winds of 60-70 km/h, and possible waterlogging in low-lying areas.
• The IMD has also forecast very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in isolated locations across Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad.
• High tides are expected to coincide with the rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding in coastal parts of Mumbai.
• Rail services have already been affected in some areas due to waterlogging and debris on tracks, adding to travel disruptions across the state.

Monsoon Turns Deadly

The latest landslide comes after several rain-related tragedies over the past two days.

In Mumbai, six people lost their lives when a chawl collapsed in Mankhurd on Sunday. Earlier, an 11-year-old boy was killed after a tree uprooted during heavy rain and fell onto a moving school bus. Two more people died in separate incidents involving falling trees.

With rescue operations still underway in Pune and more rain forecast through the week, authorities are urging residents to stay alert, avoid landslide-prone areas, and follow official weather advisories. As the monsoon intensifies across western India, emergency services remain on high alert for further flooding, infrastructure damage, and landslides in vulnerable regions.
