Global heat records could be broken by 2030, with the World Meteorological Organization warning that global temperatures are likely to remain at or near record levels over the next five years. The latest WMO report, produced by the UK Met Office, says annual global mean near-surface temperatures between 2026 and 2030 are expected to be 1.3°C to 1.9°C above pre-industrial levels.
The report adds that there is a 91% chance that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will temporarily exceed 1.5°C above the 1850–1900 average. While this would not mean the Paris Agreement limit has been permanently breached, it is a serious warning that the world is moving closer to long-term climate danger.

Why the 1.5°C Warning Matters
The WMO clarified that a single year above 1.5°C does not mean the Paris Agreement threshold has failed, because the global climate target is measured over long-term warming, usually around 20 years. However, temporary breaches are expected to happen more often as global temperatures rise.
Beyond 1.5°C, scientists warn of higher risks from stronger heatwaves, sea-level rise, ecosystem damage, water stress, and extreme weather. These impacts are already being felt across regions, especially in vulnerable coastal, tropical, and drought-prone areas.

El Niño Could Push Temperatures Higher
The report says the central tropical Pacific shows a tendency toward El Niño conditions, especially in 2027 and 2028. WMO-linked climate scientist Dr Leon Hermanson said an El Niño predicted for late 2026 increases the chances that 2027 could become the next record-breaking year.
El Niño warms sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific. When combined with human-caused climate change, it can temporarily push global temperatures higher and disrupt rainfall patterns worldwide.

Regional Climate Risks Are Also Rising
- Arctic warming: Arctic winter temperatures are projected to be 2.8°C above the 1991-2020 average, more than three and a half times the global mean anomaly.
- Sea ice loss: Further reductions are expected in the Barents Sea, Bering Sea, and Sea of Okhotsk.
- Rainfall shifts: Wetter conditions are more likely in high northern latitudes, while drier conditions may affect parts of the subtropics.
- Amazon risk: May-September forecasts for 2026–2030 suggest dry anomalies are more likely over the Amazon.

A Clear Signal for Climate Action
The warning that global heat records could be broken by 2030 is a sign that climate risks are accelerating within this decade. With 2024 already the warmest year on record and the past decade containing the ten warmest years ever observed, the next five years could define how urgently governments, industries, and communities respond to the climate crisis.
