Global EV sales may hit 23 million in 2026, according to the International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026. The report projects that electric cars will account for around 28% of total global car sales this year, showing that electric mobility continues to expand despite economic uncertainty, policy shifts, and uneven demand across major markets. The IEA said global electric car sales exceeded 20 million units in 2025, rising 20% from 2024. That means one in every four new cars sold worldwide last year was electric.

The report also notes that annual electric car sales have increased by about 3.5 million units every year since 2021, and electric cars now make up around 5% of the global car stock.

Global EV Market Continues to Expand

The global EV market reached new highs in 2025, supported by falling battery costs, stronger policy support, high fuel prices, and expanding charging networks. The IEA noted that electric cars displaced around 1.2 million barrels of oil per day in 2025, highlighting their growing impact on transport energy demand.

Around 40 countries recorded EVs accounting for at least 10% of new car sales, showing that electric mobility is no longer limited to China, Europe, and the United States. Emerging markets are also beginning to benefit from more affordable models and greater availability of Chinese-made electric cars.

Europe, China, and India Show Different EV Trends

Europe

  • Strong EV growth: Electric car sales in Europe rose by more than 30% in 2025, reaching over 4 million units.
  • Policy support: Stricter EU CO₂ standards and clean mobility policies helped increase EV adoption across the region.
  • 2026 milestone: The IEA estimates that by 2026, one in every three cars sold in Europe could be electric.

China

  • Global EV leader: China continues to dominate global EV production and sales, supplying nearly 60% of electric cars sold worldwide.
  • Major growth driver: China accounted for more than half of the global increase in electric car sales in 2025.
  • Manufacturing advantage: European and North American manufacturers each accounted for around 15% of global EV sales, far behind China.

India

  • Fast-growing market: India’s electric car sales rose 75% year-on-year in 2025, reaching around 165,000 units.
  • Still early-stage: EVs represented nearly 4% of total car sales in India, showing strong growth but modest overall adoption.
  • Domestic brands lead: Tata and Mahindra together accounted for around 60% of India’s electric car sales.

Charging Infrastructure Supports Growth

Charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly and remains one of the biggest enablers of EV adoption. In 2025, nearly 1.8 million new public charging points were added worldwide, taking the global total to more than 7 million.

This matters because wider charging access reduces range anxiety and makes EV ownership more practical for urban drivers, fleet operators, and long-distance users. However, charging growth remains uneven, with stronger deployment in China and Europe compared with many emerging economies.

Q1 2026 Slowdown Shows Market Is Uneven

Despite the strong outlook, the IEA noted a slowdown in early 2026. Global electric car sales fell by around 8% year-on-year to 3.9 million units between January and March, mainly due to weaker demand in China and the United States.

Still, Europe and emerging Asian markets continued to show strong growth. This suggests that the EV transition is not moving at the same speed everywhere, but the long-term direction remains positive.

Overall, global EV sales may hit 23 million in 2026 because the economics of electric mobility are improving. Falling battery prices, stronger charging networks, supportive policies and high fuel costs are making EVs more attractive. The pace may vary by region, but the global shift toward electric transport is becoming harder to reverse.
