India’s daytime electricity demand hits a record high as severe heatwave conditions continue to push cooling demand across households, offices, and commercial establishments. The Ministry of Power said peak daytime electricity demand touched 270.82 GW on May 21, the highest level recorded so far this summer. The rise came after four straight days of record-breaking daytime demand. With temperatures crossing 40°C to 47°C across large parts of northwest, west, central, eastern, and peninsular India, air conditioners, coolers, and fans have sharply increased pressure on the power grid.
Power Demand Breaks Records for Four Days
According to data shared by the Ministry of Power, daytime electricity demand has climbed steadily since May 18. The peak is usually seen between 2 pm and 4 pm, when heat stress is high and cooling use reaches its strongest point.

The power grid struggled to fully meet peak daytime demand for the first time this summer. On Thursday, when demand touched around 270 GW, the country recorded a peak daytime shortage of 188 MW, roughly equivalent to the peak electricity demand of a small state like Manipur.

Government Appeals for Judicious Use
The Ministry of Power said adequate arrangements have been made to meet the rising electricity demand. However, it urged citizens to use electricity “wisely and judiciously” during the intense summer period.
The grid pressure is not limited to daytime. The nighttime strain has been more acute because solar generation drops after sunset while cooling demand remains high. On Thursday, night-time demand touched 251 GW, with a shortfall of 2.5 GW.
Key power concerns include:
- Cooling load surge: ACs, coolers, and fans are driving higher demand.
- Daytime peak pressure: Demand crossed 270 GW on May 21.
- Night-time shortfalls: Solar generation falls after sunset while demand remains elevated.
- Thermal outages: At least 23 GW of coal and nuclear capacity was under forced outage as of May 20.
- Grid stability risk: Even small demand-supply gaps can strain frequency and reliability.

Heatwave Conditions to Continue
The India Meteorological Department has warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely over northwest India, central India, east India, and parts of peninsular India over the coming days.
Heatwave conditions are expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh from May 22 to May 28, with severe heatwave conditions likely over East Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are also expected to see heatwave conditions during this period.
Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand may also witness heatwave or severe heatwave conditions on different dates between May 22 and May 28.
