IMD warns of heatwave across India as large parts of north, central, and eastern India remain under extreme summer conditions. The India Meteorological Department has forecast heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in several states till at least May 28, while Delhi-NCR may see very light rain, thunderstorms, and a gradual temperature drop by the weekend.
The heat remains intense across many regions. Brahmapuri in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region recorded 47.2°C, the highest maximum temperature in the country, while parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi continued to report temperatures above normal.
Heatwave Conditions to Persist Across Several States
The IMD has warned that there may be no major change in maximum temperatures over northwest and central India till May 28. A gradual fall of 3-5°C is expected from May 29 onwards in some areas, which could bring limited relief by the end of the week.
Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are likely to remain under heatwave conditions till May 27, with severe heatwave conditions possible in isolated pockets between May 24 and May 27. Rajasthan may continue facing heatwave conditions till May 30, especially over the western parts of the state.

Rain and Thunderstorms Expected in Some Regions
While north and central India face extreme heat, parts of northeast and south India are expected to see rainfall and thunderstorms. Assam and Meghalaya may receive rain, while heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh till Tuesday.
Kerala’s Regional Meteorological Center has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and squally weather. This contrast shows how India is facing highly uneven weather patterns, with some regions battling heat stress and others preparing for rain-related disruption.

Delhi Weather Forecast and Health Precautions
Delhi is likely to remain hot, with Monday’s maximum temperature expected between 43°C and 45°C and the minimum between 29°C and 32°C. The city may see very light rain or drizzle in some areas, but real relief is more likely towards the weekend.
Prolonged heat exposure can cause dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat stroke becomes dangerous when body temperature rises above 40°C and may become life-threatening without urgent care.
People should avoid direct sun during peak afternoon hours, drink water regularly, wear loose cotton clothing, and seek medical help if symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headache, vomiting, fatigue, or confusion worsen. As the IMD warns of heatwave across India, public caution remains essential throughout the week.
