China’s alleged spy turtles and spy fish have become the latest focus of international attention after China’s Ministry of State Security claimed that foreign intelligence agencies are using marine animals equipped with sensors to gather sensitive information from its coastal waters. The ministry warned that an “invisible secret war” is unfolding around China’s coastline, with advanced surveillance technologies allegedly being deployed to monitor naval activities, offshore energy assets, and strategic maritime infrastructure.

While Beijing did not identify any specific country or provide evidence to support the allegations, the claims have reignited discussions about the growing role of technology, data collection, and unconventional methods in modern intelligence operations.

China’s Unusual Espionage Allegation

According to a statement published on WeChat by China’s Ministry of State Security, foreign intelligence agencies are increasingly relying on new forms of surveillance equipment to collect maritime information.

The ministry alleged that some marine animals have been fitted with sensors capable of operating in designated areas and transmitting collected data to overseas satellites. Officials claim these systems can gather real-time environmental information while remaining difficult to detect.
