  • Reduced imports of wood and wood products should be made to meet the raw material needs of wood-based industries and preserve foreign exchange.
  • Increase the availability of agroforestry products (AFPs) for rural and tribal populations, such as fuel wood, fodder, non-timber forest produce, and small timber, lowering demand for existing forests.
  • Complement the goal of expanding forest/tree cover to ensure ecological stability, particularly in sensitive places.

To achieve these goals and reduce demand for existing forests, we must develop the ability to strengthen agroforestry research and create a vast people’s movement.

How Many Types of Agroforestry are there?

There are five types of agroforestry:

1. Farm Forestry: It refers to schemes that encourage farmers to cultivate commercial trees on their land. It is described as the practice of forestry in all its elements on and around farms or village lands, in conjunction with rest farm procedures.

2. Extension Forestry: The practice of forestry in areas devoid of tree growth and other flora, located away from traditional forest areas, to increase the area under tree growth. It contains the following:

  • Shelter belts: These are defined as belts of trees and/or plants maintained to provide shade from wind, sun, snow drifts, and other elements.
  • Linear strip plantations: They are fast-growing species planted on linear strips of land.
  • Rehabilitation of degraded forests: The degraded regions under forests require immediate attention for ecological restoration and satisfying the socioeconomic demands of the communities in and around them.

3. Mixed Forestry: It is the practice of growing crops alongside or in between scattered fodder trees, fruit trees and fuel wood trees on appropriate wastelands, panchayat holdings and village commons.

4. Recreation Forestry: Practice of forestry with the goal of cultivating flowering trees and shrubs primarily for use as recreation forests by the urban and rural populations. This style of forestry is also known as Aesthetic forestry, which is described as the practice of forestry to create or maintain a forest of high scenic value.

5. Silvopasture: Grazing livestock beneath trees offers shade for the animals and potential income from crops or timber. Advocates favour integrating trees into pastures rather than allowing livestock into wooded areas, as farm animals can easily harm forest ecosystems.

Agroforestry Models and Methodology

Combining trees and shrubs into agricultural landscapes gives environmental, economic, and social benefits. Here are some commonly used models:

1. Alley Cropping: Plant rows of trees or bushes alongside crops. It Improves soil fertility, decreases erosion, and generates additional income from timber or fruit.

2. Silvopasture: Combines forestry and livestock grazing on the same property. It enhances animal welfare, diversifies revenue streams, and increases biodiversity.

3. Agroforestry Systems with Nitrogen-Fixing Trees: Planting nitrogen-fixing trees alongside crops or pasture improves soil fertility, eliminates the demand for chemical fertilisers, and increases crop output.

4. Windbreaks and Shelterbelts: These are trees or bushes planted to preserve crops and livestock from wind and erosion. It reduces wind speed, preserves soil moisture, and can produce additional products such as fruit or timber.

5. Forest Farming: Involves growing high-value crops under the shelter of a forest canopy. Benefits include utilising the forest’s microclimate, protecting against pests, and providing a sustainable source of non-timber forest products.

6. Riparian Buffer Strips: Plant trees and bushes near streams. It reduces soil erosion, filters pollutants from runoff, and improves wildlife habitat.

7. Homegardens: Small-scale, varied systems surrounding residences. They offer food, medicinal plants, and fuel, improving household food security and biodiversity.

8. The Taungya System: Involves growing crops with forestry species for a certain period. It helps develop tree plantations while giving income from crops in the early years.

9. Boundary Planting: Planting trees or plants around agricultural fields. It defines property lines, provides wind protection, and reaps fruits, fodder, and fuelwood.

10. Fodder Banks: Trees and shrubs are grown to feed animals. It provides a consistent high-protein feed source, particularly throughout the dry season.

11. Multi-Strata Agroforestry Systems: Multiple layers of trees, bushes, and crops are cultivated simultaneously. It makes the most available space and resources, promotes biodiversity and offers a diverse range of products.

What is the Scope of Agro-forestry?

  • Risk reduction: Diversifying crops and revenue sources lowers sensitivity to market volatility and environmental disasters.
