The Himalayas, sometimes known as the “Abode of Snow,” are a spectacular mountain range dating back 50 million years. These towering peaks and melting Himalayan Glaciers pose a serious threat to India. According to a report by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, the Himalayas may lose up to 80% of their glacier volume by the end of the century due to increasing global warming. This alarming projection has prompted global organisations like the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization and the World Meteorological Organization to launch an initiative commemorating the annual World Day for Glaciers to raise awareness about the accelerating glacier melt and its far-reaching implications.
The Himalayas’ Impact on India’s Climate
The Himalayas act as a climate buffer for the Indian subcontinent. During Western disturbances flourishing in the Mediterranean, moisture-laden winds are channelled into northwestern India, bringing much-needed rainfall. Consequently, the range acts as a barrier, holding southwest and northeast monsoon winds within the country and preventing them from leaving. This dual part guarantees constant precipitation in northern India, sustaining rivers, aquifers, and fertile plains.
However, the melting Himalayan Glaciers pose a serious threat to India. A decrease in glacier mass could weaken monsoon systems, diminish rainfall, and dry out rivers, potentially hastening desertification.
The Growing Risk to Glacial Lakes
As glaciers recede, meltwater collects and forms glacial lakes, many of which are rapidly increasing. Suhora Technologies, an Indian Earth observation firm, has noticed this occurrence, emphasising the increased risk of glacial lake outburst floods and rapid and destructive deluges caused by the collapse of natural lake barriers. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) confirms these findings, stating that 27% of Himalayan glacial lakes have increased significantly since 1984, with 130 located in India alone.
Rising global temperatures have driven lake creation to new heights, with some now reaching above 5,500 meters. Historical data shows a troubling trend: 70% of GLOF incidents in the region since 1833 have happened in the previous five decades, driven primarily by avalanches (42% of cases) and heavy rainfall (30%). These floods have the potential to devastate downstream villages, infrastructure, and livelihoods in a matter of hours.

Rainfall, Agriculture, and the Domino Effect

However, decreasing river flows will eventually lower their capacity, making energy supplies unreliable. The interplay of extremes—floods accompanied with drought—showcases the crisis’s complexity.
Effect on Communities
Glacier melt has long-term ramifications for people’s lives. Changed river routes, unexpected monsoons, and flooding will directly affect people who depend on these resources. Water and power shortages may hamper industrial operations, agricultural routines, and even fundamental everyday activities, causing economic instability. Food scarcity, a predicted outcome of diminished harvests, may raise prices, forcing vulnerable communities into hunger and poverty.

Efforts to Address the Crisis
The Indian scientific community is working to tackle this challenge. Researchers at ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre have developed an enhanced snow cover prediction method that allows for more precise satellite data analysis of Himalayan glaciers. ISRO has also launched an ambitious effort to monitor all glaciers more significant than 10 square kilometres to predict water availability and protect people downstream from floods.
On the policy front, India’s pledges under the Paris Agreement’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) call for a 45% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions intensity per GDP by 2030. While broader in scope, this vow indirectly aids glacier protection by reducing the carbon emissions that cause climate change.

The Himalayas lie on a precipice with their ancient glaciers and timeless splendour. Losing 80% of their ice by the end of the century is not a remote prospect; it is a looming fact unless coordinated action is taken. The World Day for Glaciers serves as a reminder of what is at stake: a natural wonder that provides life in South Asia.
