China has completed a 3,046-kilometer sand-blocking green belt surrounding the Taklimakan Desert, marking a major victory in its battle against desertification. This accomplishment, which was completed Thursday morning, is a component of the largest afforestation project in the world, which aims to reforest north, northeast, and northwest China. China aims to combat desertification through such large-scale initiatives, including this green belt, which serves as a key step in mitigating land degradation. The Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP), which was started in 1978 and is scheduled to end in 2050, includes the green belt as a major component.

Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program: China Aims to Combat Desertification

The Chinese government started the Three-North Shelterbelt Program (TNSP) to enhance the natural environment and expand the amount of forest cover in northwest, north, and northeast China. This huge project covers 4.069 million km² or 13 provinces (autonomous zones or municipalities) in northern China. The initiative, which is divided into three stages by a 72-year development plan, aims to increase the region’s forest cover from 5.05% to 14.95%.

In order to prevent desert encroachment and improve ecological conditions, the TNSP seeks to create a massive tree barrier. China aims to combat desertification through this initiative, which has successfully reforested over 32 million hectares of land since its inception. This effort has greatly enhanced biodiversity, forest coverage, and soil stability in areas plagued by desertification. Furthermore, this endeavour has been incorporated into China’s more comprehensive sustainable development goals (SDGs) and is essential to carbon sequestration, supporting international efforts to tackle climate change.
