The UK government has launched the National Forest Initiative in Western England, a bold move to combat climate change and boost biodiversity. This ambitious project will see 20 million trees planted and 2,500 hectares of new woodland created across rural and urban areas of Western England.
This initiative is a legally binding goal to increase England’s woodland cover from 10% to 16.5% by 2050. With forests vital for carbon sequestration, wildlife habitats, and public well-being, this marks the first new national forest in England in 30 years, following the original National Forest’s 9.8 million trees.

This initiative will span Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, the Cotswolds, the Mendips, and urban hubs like Bristol, Swindon, and Gloucester. The woodland mix will combine newly planted trees with restored existing woodlands for a resilient ecosystem.
The initiative targets cities to improve air quality, reduce heat, and create green spaces. It aims for 20% canopy cover by 2050, with some areas targeting over 30%. This follows the historical roots of the first new national forest since the original in Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire 30 years ago.

Challenges and Concerns
England’s current 10% woodland cover lags far behind the 16.5% target, with the UK at 13% overall (3.28 million hectares). The UK aims for 30,000 hectares annually, but only 21,000 hectares were planted recently, with England contributing just 5,500 hectares.
Andy Egan of the Woodland Trust warns that “much more needs to be done,” stressing sustained funding amid a tough spending climate.
Government Response and Future Plans
Over five years, £7.5 million was pledged to kickstart the Western Forest. The pledge promises environmental gains (carbon capture, flood resilience), economic growth (forestry jobs), and social perks (public access to nature).
Minister Mary Creagh says, “I’m confident we can get there,” citing public-private collaboration. Two more national forests are planned by parliament’s end, with alternative funding in exploration.
