Urban Green Spaces are increasingly seen as critical to minimising the adverse effects of climate change on public health. A comprehensive assessment done by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine found that incorporating parks, trees, and other types of greenery into cities can considerably lower heat-related diseases and deaths. This conclusion is significant as climate change continues to increase global temperatures to unprecedented heights.

The climate catastrophe is driving up global temperatures, as evidenced by record-breaking heat earlier this year. In one week, the global average surface air temperature rose to a blistering 17.15°C (62.87°F), breaking the previous record of 17.09°C. As temperatures rise, so does the danger of heat-related health problems like heat stroke, dehydration, and even mortality, especially in highly populated urban regions where temperatures are frequently higher due to the “urban heat island” effect.

A Green Space Can Help Reduce Heat-Related Illnesses

While green spaces’ overall health advantages are well recognised, their specific function in decreasing heat-related health concerns was not fully understood—until recently. The new analysis examined studies completed between 2000 and 2022 in nations like Hong Kong, Australia, Vietnam, the United States, South Korea, Portugal, and Japan. The findings were clear: cities with more green space had lower heat-related sickness and mortality rates than those with less greenery.

The researchers discovered that green spaces, such as parks and tree-lined roadways, have a cooling effect on the surrounding environment. Vegetation provides shade and releases moisture through transpiration, which cools the air. This natural cooling system reduces the harmful health impacts of severe heat, making cities more habitable and safer during heat waves.

Green spaces provide physical cooling and have a favourable impact on mental wellness. Studies have shown that spending time in nature helps alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression, all of which can increase the health effects of high temperatures. Green spaces provide a dual benefit, lowering temperatures and promoting mental well-being, which is crucial for reducing the overall burden of heat-related health issues.

Addressing Health Inequalities with Urban Green Spaces

The assessment also noted considerable health disparities in access to green spaces. A dearth of urban greenery is frequently found in low-income neighbourhoods, where people are already more sensitive to the consequences of climate change. This unequal distribution of green areas exacerbates existing health disparities, putting individuals in low-income regions at greater risk of heat-related disease and mortality.

One famous example of this discrepancy is in the United Kingdom, where a recent study found that pupils attending private schools had more than ten times the quantity of green space as those attending state schools. This inequality contributes to the growing child obesity issue since children who have limited access to outside settings are less likely to engage in physical activity. Similarly, urban areas with less green space have higher levels of air pollution, which increases the health hazards that residents experience.

Recognising the importance of green spaces in public health, the United Nations has included universal access to safe and accessible green spaces as a fundamental aim in its Sustainable Development Goals. By 2030, governments are encouraged to guarantee that urban green spaces are accessible to all, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, older people, and individuals with long-term health concerns.
