Tsunami strikes Japan’s Hokkaido and Russia’s Kuril Islands after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off the eastern shore of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30, 2025. The epicenter was located approximately 125 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a shallow depth of 19.3 km. According to the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Kamchatka section of the Geophysical Service, it was the strongest quake in the region since 1952, with warnings of potential aftershocks up to magnitude 7.5.

At least six aftershocks, ranging between 5.4 and 6.9, followed. The earthquake was caused by the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Okhotsk Plate along the active Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. The seismic shift displaced large volumes of seawater, resulting in destructive tsunami waves impacting nearby coastlines.
