India’s energy revolution, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is transforming the country’s future by fusing social progress with sustainability. This dual impact was recently highlighted by Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who highlighted how India’s energy revolution is uplifting women nationwide in addition to increasing access to clean fuel. India is developing an inclusive energy narrative that empowers communities and advances the country’s transition to self-sufficiency by fusing sustainable energy solutions with chances for leadership and financial independence.

Empowering Women Through Clean Energy

With more than 10.33 crore women receiving LPG connections, the PMUY has been a vital component of India’s energy revolution. The everyday lives of millions of people have changed as a result of this program, which has replaced old, smoke-heavy cooking methods with safer and cleaner alternatives. This change, as Puri pointed out on X, affords women dignity, improves health outcomes, and frees up time for social and economic opportunities by reducing household tasks.

In addition to having access to clean fuel, women are actively participating in the energy industry by running retail fuel stations, biogas facilities, and LPG distributorships. India purchased 42,800 tonnes of compressed biogas (CBG) in FY 2024–2025, and many of these environmentally friendly projects were spearheaded by women. In addition to promoting financial independence, this involvement positions women to influence India’s sustainable energy landscape.

Advancing Sustainability and Energy Independence

India’s energy revolution is uplifting women and encompasses high sustainability and self-sufficiency ambitions in addition to empowerment. 99% of India’s population is currently served by the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network, which covers 96% of the country’s land area and connects 1.51 crore residences to piped natural gas (PNG). In line with international climate targets, its expansion lessens dependency on fuels that emit pollutants.

Concurrently, 99% of previously restricted offshore areas—which span more than 1 million square kilometers—are now available for oil and gas development because to regulatory changes including the available Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) Round X. India is becoming a center for energy innovation thanks to these changes, which have drawn large amounts of both domestic and foreign investment. Green energy developments, including the increasing use of biogas and other renewable energy sources in the country’s energy mix, further reinforce Puri’s vision of an independent energy future.

India’s energy revolution is a potent fusion of creativity and inclusion. The country is establishing a global standard for sustainable development by prioritizing clean fuel availability, empowering women, and working toward energy independence.
