Former US President Donald Trump signed an order to bring back plastic straws, rejecting concerns about their impact on marine life. The decision, billed as a response to what Trump called “liberal overreach,” reversed past attempts to minimize plastic trash in the United States. He contended that prohibiting plastic straws was an unnecessary burden on businesses and customers and that paper alternatives were useless.
Environmental groups promptly slammed the decree, citing the disastrous impacts of plastic contamination in the oceans, where millions of tonnes of rubbish kill marine life. Scientists warn that plastic straws, which take millennia to degrade, contribute to the worldwide plastic catastrophe, threatening marine ecosystems. As the discussion heats up, Trump’s move underscores the persistent battle between environmental duty and political ideology in influencing US sustainability and conservation policies.
Trump Signs Order to Reinstate Plastic Straws, Citing Consumer Dissatisfaction
On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed an order to bring back plastic straws, asserting that their impact on marine life is negligible and criticizing paper alternatives favored by environmental activists. The directive reverses a program implemented by his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, that aimed to eliminate single-use plastic utensils, including straws, from government organizations by 2035.
“We’re going back to plastic straws,” Trump stated as he signed the order in the Oval Office. He criticized paper straws as impracticable: “They don’t work. I’ve used them several times, and they crack and explode. If something is hot, it doesn’t last long—sometimes only seconds.” “This is a ridiculous situation.”

Environmental Debate and Policy Reversal
Environmentalists have long advocated for the elimination of plastic straws, citing their negative impact on marine ecosystems. However, Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with paper alternatives and dismissed these worries. “I don’t think plastic is going to affect a shark as it’s munching its way through the ocean,” he said.
Presenting the executive order, White House staff secretary Will Scharf stated that the environmental impact of plastic straws is “entirely debatable” and that American consumers are “wildly dissatisfied with their straws.”
Trump’s latest environmental setback comes after a string of contentious decisions since his return to the White House for a second term. Shortly after his inauguration on January 20, he withdrew the United States from the Paris climate pact and renewed his pledge to promote domestic oil drilling under the slogan “drill, baby, drill.” Critics believe that these policies undercut global climate efforts, but Trump claims they are necessary for economic growth and energy independence.
