A recent study has found that Greenland’s glaciers are melting at an alarming rate, accelerating ice loss and rising sea levels. The study was conducted by leading climate scientists from Durham University UK, the Department of Geography, such as Dr. Tom Chudley, a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow and the study’s lead author, which was published in Nature Geoscience in February 2025.

Greenland’s Glaciers Melting

Crevasses are large fractures in glaciers that are widening and deepening faster than previously recorded due to Greenland’s Glaciers Melting at an unprecedented rate. These cracks allow meltwater to reach the glacier base, speeding up ice movement and melting.

The researchers from the study have compared data from 2016 and 2021, revealing significant increases in crevasse depth and volume. They have used advanced technology to track glacier changes over the past five years, utilizing 3D high-resolution digital elevation models to make such a comparison.

Impact on Sea Levels

Greenland is known for its glaciers. However, unprecedented global warming has caused 250 billion tons of ice to be lost from Greenland’s ice sheet in the past year alone. This melting directly contributes to rising sea levels, threatening coastal cities worldwide, including New York and Mumbai.

Furthermore, this study’s main finding was that 50-90% of meltwater is caused by glacier melting. This meltwater is increased due to global temperatures rising, meltwater flows through the crevasses, growing the intensity of glacier movement and iceberg calving into the ocean.

Climate Change Acceleration

The study confirms what the scientific community has already warned us about: warmer ocean and air temperatures drive glacier retreat at unprecedented rates. The melting recorded in the study has outpaced previously predicted climate models.

Dr. Tom Chudley noted, “We expected to see more crevassing in a warming climate, but the scale and speed of change have been startling.”

Urgency of Climate Action

The study emphasizes combining glacier dynamics into climate change policies and mitigation strategies, but glaciology is often overlooked and forgotten. Scientists stress the urgent need for global emission reductions to slow the melting process and mitigate its effects.

Co-author Dr. Ian Howat, director of the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center at Ohio State, warned, “This is a self-reinforcing cycle—more ice loss leads to more crevasses, which further accelerate melting.”

If current trends continue, sea levels could rise by up to one meter by 2100, displacing millions worldwide.
