More than 1,300 firefighters were sent to tackle flames in Arouca, Ponte da Barca, and Penamacor on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, with the assistance of twelve waterbombing aircraft. Devastating Impact Across Regions

Several dozen communities, including those from Fornos de Carvão, have been forced to evacuate due to the largest fire, which started on Monday, July 28, 2025, in the Arouca area, 300 kilometers north of Lisbon. To maintain safety, the well-known Paiva Walkways and suspension bridge, popular tourist destinations, have been closed. Robust Relief Efforts

Portugal has organized a substantial response to fight the fires. With the help of dozens of vehicles and 26 firefighting aircraft, including 12 waterbombing planes, more than 1,300 firefighters are on the ground, with 500 in Arouca, over 400 in Ponte da Barca, and more than 415 in Penamacor.

Spain’s deployment of four water-carrying aircraft, primarily to support efforts in Peneda-Geres, has been a vital contribution. The Municipal Emergency and Civil Protection Plan has been launched in the impacted districts, and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro visited emergency service headquarters to supervise activities. Authorities in Ponte da Barca are warning the public to exercise caution owing to the high risk of fire, and evacuees have taken sanctuary in nearby churches.

Damage Assessment

Although the extent of the damage in Arouca and Penamacor is still being determined, reports point to substantial forest loss and risks to residential homes. The Ponte da Barca fire has burned almost 2,000 hectares. One important economic area of Arouca, local tourism, has been harmed by the closure of the Paiva Walkways. The fires’ proximity to residences in Penamacor has sparked worries about possible structural damage. In addition, a firefighting vehicle overturned on the A3 highway at Ponte da Barca, wounding five people non-seriously, and 20 people, including 14 firefighters, have received minor medical attention.
