Lake Zurich reaches historic low as Switzerland faces a worsening drought marked by repeated heatwaves, below-average rainfall and falling groundwater and surface-water levels. On Wednesday, the lake’s level dropped to 404.45 metres above sea level, breaking the previous record low of 405.46 metres recorded in 1952. The annual mean level is 405.93 metres, according to Switzerland’s Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

The record at Lake Zurich is part of a broader water shortage affecting several parts of Switzerland. FOEN says the country has experienced a “marked drought” since spring, with conditions worsening in recent weeks.

Dry Weather Pushes Water Levels Down

  • The combination of limited rainfall and persistent heat has left soils unusually dry and reduced the amount of water stored both above and below ground.
  • Several Swiss lakes are currently below their normal seasonal levels.
  • Among those affected are Lake Constance, shared by Switzerland, Germany and Austria, and Lake Maggiore, which lies partly in Switzerland and Italy.

However, FOEN said Lake Zurich was so far the only Swiss lake to have reached a record low.

Low Water Starts Affecting Ferry Operations

The unusually low level is already creating practical problems on Lake Zurich. The Zurich Lake Ferry company, which operates services between Horgen on the western shore and Meilen on the eastern shore, has introduced restrictions on vehicle loading.

Heavy trucks and several other vehicle types are currently barred from crossings because of the lake’s unusually shallow conditions.

The restrictions show how a water-level decline that initially appears to be an environmental statistic can quickly affect transport and everyday activity around the lake.

Lake Maggiore Faces Its Own Water Emergency

The drought is also creating concern farther south. Last week, an Italian-Swiss body responsible for regulating Lake Maggiore’s water levels held an emergency meeting and agreed to increase the outflow from Lake Lugano into Lake Maggiore.

The decision followed warnings from Italy’s environment ministry about critically low water levels in Lake Maggiore. Officials are particularly concerned about the potential consequences for agriculture downstream, including rice-growing areas around Novara, Lomellina and Milan.

The situation illustrates how low water levels can extend beyond individual lakes and create challenges for agriculture and water management across national borders.

Not Every Swiss Lake Is Seeing the Same Impact

  • The picture is different at Lake Geneva, Switzerland’s largest lake. Its level has remained close to its annual average at around 372 metres above sea level.
  • FOEN said Lake Geneva has benefited from increased river inflows linked partly to glacier melt.
  • That has helped offset some of the effects of the country’s dry conditions.

Still, the contrast between Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich highlights how differently individual water bodies can respond to weather, river inflows, geography and seasonal conditions.

A Warning From Switzerland’s Water Levels

Lake Zurich reaches a historic low at a time when Switzerland is already dealing with prolonged dryness rather than a short-lived dip in rainfall. FOEN has warned that the drought has worsened in recent weeks, leaving soils and water resources under increasing pressure.

Whether conditions improve will depend heavily on rainfall in the coming weeks and months. Until then, the record at Lake Zurich offers a clear indication of how quickly persistent heat and a lack of precipitation can alter one of Switzerland’s most familiar landscapes.
