What if using sheep’s wool could help to protect glaciers that are melting without increasing the amount of plastic waste? That is the question that has led to a new experiment at Switzerland’s Tsanfleuron Glacier, where the Swiss glacier gets covered in sheep’s wool blankets. Around 200 square metres of ice have been covered with two prototype blankets made from sheep’s wool. The Keep It Wool project, which is being run by the Summit Foundation and the University of Lausanne, is comparing the biodegradable coverings with the conventional synthetic geotextiles used for slowing down summer melting.
This experiment is taking place because glaciers in the Alps are still losing ice as a result of increasing temperatures, and the researchers are investigating whether wool can offer the same level of protection as plastic-based sheets while making use of a material that is often discarded in Switzerland.

Why Are Researchers Covering a Glacier With Wool?

Synthetic tarpaulins and geotextiles have been used in Switzerland for years to protect limited areas of snow and ice during the warmer months.

  • By reflecting sunlight and reducing the heat reaching the ice surface, these coverings can slow local melting, particularly at ski resorts and other tourism-related sites.

The problem is that many of these protective sheets are made from plastic and can shed microfibres into the environment.

Wool Performs Surprisingly Well in First Tests

Researchers installed the two wool prototypes on the Tsanfleuron Glacier in June and have been comparing their performance with conventional synthetic coverings throughout the summer. Measurements have been taken every two weeks to track how effectively each material limits ice loss.

According to project manager Steiner, the wool blankets reduced melting about as effectively as the conventional coverings, with the thicker wool prototype performing slightly better in the measurements conducted so far.

The physical durability of the material also surprised researchers. Fisolan’s Niklaus Saegesser said he initially expected the wool to be insufficiently stable, while student Elliot Gaffiot described the results as unexpectedly strong.

A Local Solution, Not a Cure for Glacier Loss

The Swiss glacier gets covered in sheep’s wool blankets experiment should not be interpreted as evidence that wool could stop glaciers from disappearing. Protective coverings are only practical across very small areas. At present, roughly 0.02% of Switzerland’s glacier surface is covered by protective sheets.

That makes the potential application much narrower but still useful. If further testing confirms the results, wool could eventually replace some plastic coverings already used around ski pistes, tourism facilities and snow-management sites, reducing reliance on synthetic materials and giving discarded Swiss wool a productive use.

For the much larger problem of glacier retreat, however, no blanket can provide a long-term solution. Scientists continue to point to rising global temperatures and greenhouse-gas emissions as the fundamental drivers of ice loss. The wool experiment may offer a cleaner way to protect selected patches of ice, but slowing widespread glacier disappearance ultimately depends on reducing emissions.
