Being an environmental scientist who is closely observing the rising challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, I am inspired to see this ground-breaking collaboration of 165 experts from 57 countries. This alliance, spearheaded by the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services), implies the need to align climate and biodiversity decisions. They are interconnected crises that have to be solved in an integrated approach in order to have a healthy future.

According to the report, it is estimated that around $10 trillion to $25 trillion annually is lost owing to failure to integrate biodiversity and climate considerations into decision-making. The cost of inaction is added up to $500 billion per year for climate change alone. Such figures are meant to wake up policymakers and others all over the globe to take on integrated strategies. This article focuses on the essence of the IPBES Nexus Assessment, its key findings, and the solutions it proposes in the context of breaking silos in climate and biodiversity decisions.

The Interconnected Nature of Climate and Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the foundation upon which human existence rests. Ecosystems provide essential services like producing food, purifying water, and regulating climate. However, this biodiversity is declining at a speed never seen before. The report quantifies the economic costs of inaction. For example, the loss of biodiversity could mean that by 2050, the global economy will have lost $14 trillion every year. Conversely, immediate action would open a vault of business opportunities worth $10 trillion and create 395 million jobs by 2030.

2. Interrelated Crises:

Solving one crisis alone often worsens others. Consider a situation where you make all the efforts focused only on carbon sequestration, that is, through monoculture plantations; then you will notice the sufferings of biodiversity as the water sources will get depleted. That is why it is essential to have combined solutions to avoid any such trade-offs in the future.

3. Solutions Framework:

The report outlines 71 potential solutions to address these challenges. These include:

  • Rewilding is the process of restoring ecosystems to their natural states to enhance biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
  • Reducing pollution by cutting plastic and chemical pollution that harms ecosystems and human health.
  • Nature-based healthcare helps promote access to green spaces for mental and physical health benefits, already practised in some countries through “nature prescriptions.”

Breaking Down Silos: A Holistic Approach

Current policy approaches often create unintended consequences due to their fragmented nature. Renewable energy projects, for example, are important in mitigating climate change but can cause disruptions in ecosystems if not well planned. Wind farms could destroy bird populations and alter the aquatic ecosystem if large hydroelectric dams are constructed. The Nexus Assessment, therefore, calls on policymakers to strategize with such trade-offs.

Agroforestry as a Case Study:

Agroforestry is an example of how the integration of trees into agricultural systems provides much-needed benefits from holistic decisions. Agroforestry supports biodiversity and improves soil health and carbon sequestration levels while enhancing agricultural productivity. Such a nature-friendly approach reflects the values of integrated policymaking, something that the IPBES report has advocated for.

Reforming Financial Systems

Misaligned financial systems may be the number one hindrance to integrated solutions. Public incentives and private financial flows target harmful biodiversity practices and do little to mitigate climate change impacts. Subsidies on fossil fuels and industrial agriculture are among these practices that negatively impact the environment. Closing the $700 billion biodiversity funding gap through financial reform is called for in the IPBES report. Redirecting such harmful subsidies to conservation and restoration activities will promote the practice.

Lessons from Namibia: A Model for Integration

This example of Namibia represents the benefits of integrated climate and biodiversity decisions. The country powers local communities to manage wildlife and other natural resources in a sustainable manner through its community-based natural resource management programs. These programs have resulted in:

  • Increased Biodiversity: Successful conservation efforts have been able to rebound populations of iconic species, such as elephants and rhinos.
  • Economic Benefits: Ecotourism, motivated by biodiversity conservation, forms a major portion of Namibia’s GDP.
  • Climate Resilience: Sustainable land management practices enhance the resilience of ecosystems to climate impacts.

Namibia’s success underlines the need for local engagement and integration of environmental and socio-economic goals.

The Way Forward: Recommendations for Policymakers

The IPBES Nexus Assessment offers a roadmap to break silos in climate and biodiversity decisions.

  • A key recommendation is to promote cross-sectoral collaboration through ministries and stakeholders to coordinate policies in the climate, biodiversity, water, and health sectors.
  • Adopt solutions that are based on natural processes, like reforestation, wetland restoration, and sustainable agriculture.
  • Develop synergies among global frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement on climate change and the Convention on Biological Diversity.
  • Public education on the interdependency of climate and biodiversity can form a basis for public support for an integrated policy approach.

    The IPBES Nexus Assessment could be a game-changer for how we tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, and so many interconnected challenges like water scarcity and food insecurity. It calls for holistic, integrated solutions, and it couldn’t be more timely and is totally in line with what the EcoRestoration Alliance and people like me have been shouting out for years now. IPBES should connect to us for our insights.

    For too long, climate science has focused almost exclusively on greenhouse gases, but the real story is so much bigger. The biosphere’s natural cooling systems are driven by a healthy biosphere in interacton with the water cycles. The atmospheric water cycle, evapotranspiration, cloud forming, the biotic pump, export of latent heat into space are the key elements that have stabilized climate and weather but have now been so much disrupted by human activity that we have left the Goldilocks climate. We must return to it fast or face wholesale collapse of our societies. This IPBES report gets us closer to seeing the planet as a living system, where everything is interconnected and biodiversity isn’t just a nice-to-have but a must-have for climate stability.
    Now, the challenge is to wake people up to how the climate really works and embedding this understanding into global policy and decision-making.
