A severe winter storm in the Northeast US knocked out power for more than half a million homes and businesses, and roads turned into a mess as heavy snow and wild winds whipped from Massachusetts down to Delaware. Officials warned people to stay alert, since dangerous conditions weren’t letting up anytime soon, hazards last through Monday and even into Tuesday. Power companies struggled to keep up, which caused some of the biggest outages of the season, with whole neighborhoods left in the dark after power lines snapped and equipment broke down. The storm picked up speed fast as it barreled inland from the Mid-Atlantic, catching a lot of towns off guard.

Outage Hotspots and Challenges for Utilities

In Massachusetts alone, the number of outage reports exceeded 180,000 as the heavy, wet snow fell on top of trees and infrastructure, causing the lines to break under the pressure. In New Jersey, there were almost 130,000 outages, while Delaware and Maryland had tens of thousands of customers in the dark.

Other states, such as New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, also experienced widespread power outages. Eversource Energy and FirstEnergy were among the utilities that struggled the most as their power grids caved under the pressure of the storm conditions.

Travel Chaos and Emergency Measures

The storm affected flight operations across the Northeast by causing large numbers of cancellations due to the large amounts of snow at many of the airports and difficulties faced by ground crews trying to make the runways safe. Boston, Newark, and New York were among the many major airports reporting delays throughout the day on Monday due to the substantial amount of snow that had accumulated.

In addition to airlines cancelling flights, many state and local officials imposed temporary travel restrictions on some of the major highways as they requested that motorists not travel on the roadways unless they had an emergency. Blizzard warnings were issued for some of the cities in the urban areas, and many urban public transportation systems suspended their operations to protect passengers, as well as the crews who work on them.

Outlook and Recovery Efforts

While the storm has subsided, utility officials expect full restoration of power to areas that were hardest hit to take a couple of days. Repair efforts are complicated further due to the high winds and snowdrifts, as well as the continued below-freezing temperatures for those who have lost heat and/or have no electric service.

Although conditions are projected to improve gradually, forecasters have cautioned that these improvements may be exacerbated by ongoing snow and wind that would contribute to additional complications in attempting to restore service. A severe winter storm in the Northeast US has revealed the dependence of critical infrastructure on extreme weather, and will have lasting effects on the populations as they work to recover from this event.
