According to recent research, just 25% of global tropical rainforests are in high integrity, meaning they are of good quality and capable of supporting the rich biodiversity they are known for. These forests, home to over 16,000 terrestrial species, are crucial in maintaining ecological balance. Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that less than 25% of the remaining tropical wet forests provide suitable habitats for amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

25% of Global Tropical Rainforests in High Integrity

Tree height, canopy cover, and the amount of time since forests were subjected to human pressure were all measured using NASA satellite data, and the results were combined to create a Forest Structural Integrity Index (FSII). For instance, the habitat of the golden bowerbird appears to be well conserved; however, only 36% of the rainforest is of excellent quality, even though 84% of its area remains forested. In West Africa, 80% of the Diana monkey’s habitat is still covered by forests, yet merely 0.7% of these forests are considered excellent quality.

Causes and Consequences of Forest Degradation

The structure of high-quality rainforests is multilayered, with little trees and bushes in the lower reaches, medium-sized trees in the middle level, and tall trees in the surface layer. Degraded forests, on the other hand, have broken trees, thick undergrowth, and indications of logging. The researchers discovered that, on average, low-integrity forests now cover 69% of species distributions. This stark contrast highlights that only 25% of global tropical rainforests are in high integrity, underscoring the urgent need for better conservation practices.

The research highlight ted that forest-dependent species, particularly those threatened, in decline, or with limited geographic ranges, possess disproportionately small amounts of high-integrity forest habitat. For instance, only 9% of the remaining tropical forests for threatened bird species were assessed as being of good quality, compared to 26% for non-threatened bird species.

The study warned that species inhabiting low-integrity forests face a heightened risk of extinction if deforestation continues. It emphasized the urgency of taking targeted measures to protect these vulnerable habitats, stating that time is running out for many tropical rainforest species, and immediate action is crucial to prevent extinction from becoming inevitable.

Urgent Need for Targeted Conservation Strategies

The findings underscored the shortcomings of conservation strategies that treat forests as uniform land cover. The report noted that simply preserving forest cover without addressing its quality fails to mitigate significant human impacts such as logging, road construction, and mining, which disrupt forest structure, functionality, and species composition.

To attain nearly zero loss of high biodiversity regions by 2030, the researchers called for intensifying efforts to prevent deforestation, protect high-integrity forests, and implement policies under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
