As winter gets nearer and the air over Delhi changes thick with smog, the city’s efforts to breathe easier have once again transformed into trouble. The novel intervention to trigger rainfall through artificial means was hailed as a potential lifeline – but in practice, Delhi cloud-seeding fails to deliver the hoped-for downpour.

In an unparalleled move for the capital, authorities inaugurated a pilot cloud-seeding programme under the aegis of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) in association with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and aviation regulators. The aim is to release microscopic particles into low-lying clouds and provoke rainfall, hoping the precipitation would carry away fine particulate matter (PM2.5/PM10) that plagues the city every winter.
