Recent research by South African ecologists has dispelled allegations that climate change is causing the African Baobab (Adansonia digitata) tree to die. According to a widely recognised 2018 study published in Nature Plants, ten of South Africa’s fifteen oldest and largest baobabs have been killed or collapsed, purportedly due to climate change. This allegation immediately gained hold, fuelling fears that these iconic trees were in danger from global warming. However, fresh research undertaken by South African scientists claims this conclusion was hypothetical and lacking substantial evidence. Despite its uncertainties, the story went viral, influencing popular perception of the effects of climate change on these ancient trees.

The Crucial Role of Baobabs in African Ecosystems

Baobab trees, sometimes called “Trees of Life,” are essential in African ecosystems. Native to the continent, they provide food and shelter for both animals and humans while helping to reduce climate change’s effects. Their superfruit, high in vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, are a significant source of revenue for thousands of farmers. According to some estimations, the baobab fruit market might reach $10 million.

The baobab’s contributions go beyond its nutritional significance. Its high fibre content functions as a natural prebiotic, encouraging the growth of good intestinal bacteria. These trees are also culturally significant to many local cultures, which use their leaves, fruits, seeds, and trunks for medical and nutritional benefits. Some baobabs can live for over 1,000 years, making them one of the world’s oldest living things and an iconic symbol of African tenacity.

Thriving African Baobab: Icons of Climate Resilience

The research, titled Baobabs as Symbols of Resilience, provides evidence that baobab populations in mainland Africa are thriving. Contrary to prior beliefs, the oldest and largest baobabs demonstrate resilience rather than vulnerability. In a news release by the African Baobab Alliance, a non-profit research organisation, ecologists presented solid evidence that the trees are healthy. The study blamed the death of a few baobabs on natural components, like hydraulic failure and water retention, apart from climate change.

By adapting to their surroundings, baobabs have historically survived catastrophic weather patterns, such as severe droughts and floods. According to the study, no major climate variations were observed in the region that could explain the deaths of the trees tracked in the previous survey. Instead, the authors conclude that structural difficulties and excessive water retention were the more likely causes of the trees’ collapse.

The study found that baobabs are generally healthy and stable, with low mortality rates. According to a 2023 assessment, only one of the 106 monitored baobabs died in the previous 17 years, while many others continue to develop.

Lead author and baobab ecologist Sarah Venter emphasised, “Contrary to popular belief, adult baobabs do not appear to be dying at an accelerated rate due to climate change.” On the contrary, trees are symbols of persistence and climate resistance. However, Venter cautioned that habitat degradation and herbivory remain serious risks, mainly because they hinder the recruitment of younger trees, jeopardising long-term survival.

Gus Le Breton, board chairman of the African Baobab Alliance, emphasised the necessity of promoting the Baobab market. He stated that fears about climate change had caused some to believe that avoiding the consumption of baobab fruit would assist the species to survive, but this notion was not true. Instead, Le Breton stated that as more baobab products are used, the tree’s value increases, assuring its protection as a vital resource.
