A recent study published in the journal PLOS ONE suggests that marine mammals, such as bottlenose dolphins, may inhale microplastics when they surface for breath. The researchers behind this study are particularly concerned about the long-term effects of these ingested particles on the dolphins’ respiratory systems.

A team of US scientists collected exhaled air samples from dolphins in two separate locations: Sarasota Bay, Florida, an urban estuary, and Barataria Bay, Louisiana, a more rural setting. To their amazement, microplastics were discovered in the exhaled breath of all 11 dolphins tested. This study suggests that microplastics may be present not only in water and food but also in the air, implying that dolphins, like humans, may be inhaling these dangerous particles.

The Impact of Airborne Microplastics

Airborne microplastics have been identified in various locations around the world, from urban areas to remote locales such as Mount Everest. According to research, the wind plays a vital role in distributing these particles, explaining their prevalence in even the most pure environments. Most of the microplastics detected in dolphin breath samples were polyester, a widely used polymer in apparel. These particles are frequently lost during washing, especially in hot water cycles, releasing large amounts of plastic fibres into the environment.

Leslie Hart, a public health expert and co-author of the study at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, emphasised the significance of this finding. Microplastic inhalation in humans is a developing field, but there have been few studies on wildlife,” Hart said. With their bigger lung capacity and deep breathing patterns, Dolphins may be more susceptible to ingesting microplastics than people. This could have major consequences for their health, especially because studies have connected breathing microplastics to lung inflammation and other respiratory problems.

Dolphins’ Health is at Risk

The study raises significant worries about the health effects of microplastics on humans and wildlife. These microscopic plastic particles are found in the air, water, and food; exposure to them has been related to negative health impacts. Inhalation, along with ingestion, is one of the primary means by which humans and animals come into contact with microplastics.

Dolphins in Barataria Bay, Louisiana, may be at a heightened risk of injury due to their already weakened health from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil leak. The researchers are concerned that microplastic intake will exacerbate the dolphins’ underlying respiratory difficulties. “There is a risk that this will exacerbate problems,” said Hart, who has spent more than a decade researching plastic contamination in dolphins.

The researchers gathered dolphin breath samples using an approved catch-and-release approach, which involved placing petri dishes over the dolphins’ blowholes. They also used air samples from regions near the dolphins as controls. While the study used opportunistic captures, the findings may not fully represent the broader dolphin population; they do provide an important peek into a previously unexplored area of plastic contamination.
