The new fuel charge by IndiGo on all its flights, domestic and international, starting March 14, is due to a spike in jet fuel prices caused by unrest in West Asia. Depending on where you’re headed, the fee could be anywhere from Rs 425 to Rs 2,300, which is their way of dealing with rising costs without making ticket prices too outrageous. Right now, Aviation Turbine Fuel takes up about 40% of what it costs to run a flight, so these fuel prices are a big deal when it comes to how much you pay for your ticket.
What Are the New Fuel Charges, and How Are They Structured?
- Domestic and Indian Subcontinent Flights: The fuel surcharge will be Rs 425 per ticket, applicable to all bookings from March 14 onwards.
- West Asia Flights: The fuel surcharge will be Rs 900 per ticket, which will include Gulf destinations as well as other neighboring regions.
- South East Asia & China, Africa & West Asia Flights: The fuel surcharge will be Rs 1,800 per ticket, which will include all popular international destinations in Asia and Africa.
- Europe Flights: The fuel surcharge will be Rs 2,300 per ticket, which will be the highest fuel surcharge because of the longer distances to be covered, and hence, more fuel consumption.
- Statement from Airline: IndiGo said that in order to adjust to fuel surges, there would be a requirement to increase fares. However, they are imposing a fuel surcharge that is relatively low.

Why Is a Fuel Surcharge Necessary, and What Does It Mean for Travelers?
Fuel surcharges are common today as they protect a carrier from spiraling fuel costs, which are now estimated at almost 40% of an airline’s operating costs and are usually the highest cost a carrier incurs. Fuel suppliers have reduced supplies due to the ongoing unrest caused by recent geopolitical events in the Middle East that have affected the supply chain. Therefore, fuel prices continue to rise.
The increase in airlines’ operating costs has created global trends with corporate interests and relationships changing, which has allowed airlines to be viable in the marketplace. The new fuel charge by IndiGo will be implemented in order to respond to today’s global fuel supply volatility, and thus will impact airlines in terms of their ticket prices for the foreseeable future.
