International collaboration, such as India and the UK collaboration on Green Hydrogen Safety, brought together people from both governments, industry, and research, and just wrapped up a big conference in New Delhi, all about hydrogen safety and standards. They talked about everything: rules, safety checks, and new tech, building strong safety systems from start to finish in the hydrogen supply chain, so clean energy can really take off. This partnership highlights how global teamwork pushes the shift to low-carbon energy faster.

What Key Safety Issues Were Discussed at the India-UK Green Hydrogen Conference?

The India-UK conference on Green Hydrogen Standards and Safety Protocols was organised on February 27 in New Delhi. The conference was attended by participants from government organisations, industry associations, academia, research organisations, and regulatory bodies. The conference was organised by the National Centre for Hydrogen Safety (NCHS) under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in association with the British High Commission in India and WRI India.

Key Discussions at the Conference:

  • Hydrogen Production Safety: Experts at the conference focused on the importance of developing operational guidelines and monitoring technologies to ensure safe production of hydrogen using renewable sources of energy.
  • Hydrogen Storage and Transport: The conference also touched upon the development of international standards for safe storage of hydrogen, including pipelines, to ensure its transport.
  • Alignment of International Standards: The conference by BIS focused on aligning international standards for hydrogen with those in India to ensure safe and competitive hydrogen production.
  • Regulatory Control: The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) officials shared their insights into compliance, hazards, and risks in the context of hydrogen.

How Does This Partnership Contribute to the Future Hydrogen Economy?

India is developing its hydrogen economy rapidly with the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by the year 2030. For India, the green hydrogen sector presents a great opportunity to reduce the import of fossil fuels, boost clean technology innovation, and create over 600,000 jobs in the country by the end of the decade.

Both officials from the two nations agreed to enhance their cooperation in the areas of safety standards, regulatory capacity building, and innovation, which will help to create a robust and globally competitive hydrogen ecosystem. This meeting also highlights the significance of such international collaborations, such as the India and the UK collaboration on Green Hydrogen Safety, to ensure that the rapid development of the hydrogen sector is safe, sustainable, and economically viable for the future.
