A Namibian Cheetah gives birth to five cubs at Kuno, a significant step in the country’s efforts to restore its cheetah population. The birth took place at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, where cheetahs were reintroduced after decades of extinction. Aasha, who came from Namibia as part of Project Cheetah, gave birth on February 7 in Madhya Pradesh, and forest officials see this as an encouraging sign for the project, which aims to re-establish the species in its natural home.

The Birth That Changed the Numbers
Aasha had her cubs in a protected part of the forest, and officials verified the births by monitoring cameras and conducting on-site checks. The cubs are in a safe spot with limited human contact. With these new cubs, India now has 35 cheetahs, and wildlife experts believe this increase strengthens the group, which is still weak, and gives confidence that the reintroduction plan can work in the long run.
Aasha was in the first group of cheetahs moved from Namibia to India as part of Project Cheetah. She traveled a long distance after months of getting ready to make sure she would be safe and adjust well, and this is Aasha’s second time having cubs in two years, which shows she’s adjusting well to India.

Project Cheetah and Cub Protection Measures
Cheetahs disappeared from India over seventy years ago because of hunting and habitat loss. Project Cheetah began addressing this by moving African cheetahs to selected Indian reserves, primarily Kuno National Park.
