Rescue Operations and Challenges

Rescue teams, including around 300 personnel from the Indian Army, have been deployed to Wayanad. An additional 140 troops are on standby in Thiruvananthapuram to assist if needed. The rescue operations are challenging due to the heavy rains and the collapse of a critical bridge in the region. The relentless downpour has also caused blocked roads, further complicating the efforts to reach the affected areas.

Videos shared on social media show the devastating impact of the landslides, with muddy waters sweeping through streets and forests, washing away homes and leaving residents stranded. The severity of the situation is underscored by reports from families who are still searching for their missing loved ones.

Ongoing Weather Concerns and Government Response

The weather forecast for Wayanad and nearby districts remains grim, with the meteorological department predicting more rain in the coming days. Districts such as Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod are on high alert, while Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam have been issued an orange alert.

After this disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, assuring full support from the central government. The Prime Minister’s Office has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for those injured. The Chief Minister described the incident as having wiped out entire areas, highlighting the scale of the tragedy.

As Kerala continues to face severe weather conditions, the state’s government and rescue teams remain vigilant, working tirelessly to reach those affected and provide the necessary aid. The community and officials alike hope for a swift recovery and relief from Kerala Wayanad Landslides.
