Many parts of India are experiencing significantly higher-than-normal daytime and nighttime temperatures, giving the impression that India’s spring season is quickly ending. Heat waves are already imminent as the nation has an early start to the summer season. Temperatures are still rising even though the equatorial Pacific Ocean’s La Niña phenomenon typically causes winters and springtime in India to be generally colder. With January 2025 being the warmest January on record and a temperature anomaly of 1.75°C over the pre-industrial (1850–1900) norm for the month, this change coincides with a rise in global temperatures.
The Disappearing Spring: What’s Happening in India’s Spring Season?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a press release stating that daytime temperatures across northwest and central India abruptly increased by 2°C between February 9 and February 10. While northern parts of the peninsula and eastern India have seen a 2°C increase in daily temperatures, several regions in northwest and central India are currently seeing temperatures 3–4°C above average. Maximum temperatures in southern India had already risen to 30–35°C; the highest recorded temperature was 36.6°C in Kalaburagi, located in the north interior of Karnataka.
The majority of Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat, west Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, southwest Madhya Pradesh, west Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam have also experienced nighttime temperature increases of 2–4°C. With this abrupt change, these areas are beginning to experience a summer-like climate, raising concerns about the shortening duration of India’s spring season.

The Role of Climate Change
Experts believe that a warm air mass that is partially flowing into India from China and Eurasia is to blame for the temperature increase. However, the heat cannot be relieved by weak and disorganized winds. Since January, the trend of above-normal temperatures has continued. In January 2025, the mean, minimum, and maximum temperatures were 25.53ºC, 12.51ºC, and 19.02ºC, respectively, according to the IMD. These were higher than the historical averages of 24.61ºC, 11.46ºC, and 18.04ºC. The respective temperatures were 0.92ºC, 1.04ºC, and 0.98ºC higher than average.
According to historical data, the second-greatest average temperature anomaly since 1901 was recorded in January 2025; only January 1921 exceeded it. East and northeastern India experienced the second-highest average minimum temperature since 1901. Similarly, nighttime temperatures in 11 of the 12 months of 2024 were higher than usual.
La Niña started in December 2024; however, El Niño persisted until June 2024. Despite this, according to experts, La Niña may not be responsible for the present warming trend. Some scientists contend that labeling the current equatorial Pacific phenomenon as La Niña is inaccurate, particularly as some areas of the eastern equatorial Pacific continue to be warm. The Bay of Bengal is still warm, but the Arabian Sea is showing a mixed pattern as well, with warmer temperatures in the east and lower temperatures in the west.
