The U.S. Drought Monitor reports that drought sweeps across almost every US state, marking an unprecedented occurrence in all states except Alaska and Kentucky. This week, about 54% of the land in the 48 contiguous states is afflicted by drought, and slightly over 45% of the U.S. and Puerto Rico are under drought conditions. Drought levels continue to rise as the country enters the fall season after a record-breaking hot summer. More than 150 million people, including 149.8 million in the contiguous states, are now affected by the drought—a 34% increase since last week and a staggering 150% rise since last month.

With over 318 million acres of crops impacted—a 57% increase from the previous month—the drought’s effects have also spread to the agricultural sector. This circumstance serves as an alarming indicator of the climate catastrophe, which is mostly caused by human actions such as burning fossil fuels, which intensify global warming. Experts note that drought is caused by both decreased rainfall and consistently high temperatures, which accelerate the removal of moisture from the soil and environment. Depending on the frequency of rainfall, droughts might happen even with modest increases in precipitation. If heavy rains cause runoff instead of absorption, they are less effective in getting moisture into the soil.

Climate Change Impacts on Droughts and Water Supply

Extremes of drought and flooding can both be made worse by the effects of climate change. Extreme rains frequently fail to permeate the soil, resulting in surface runoff and possible floods, according to Dr. Lifeng Luo, a professor of environmental science at Michigan State University. Mayor Eric Adams of New York City and other municipal officials have started to address the drought, which sweeps across almost every U.S. State, by urging citizens to use less water by flushing toilets only when required and watering lawns less frequently. Dr. Luo notes that while water-saving measures like taking shorter showers can free up water for other purposes, they have little effect on reversing drought conditions.

More dependence on groundwater resources, which provide more than 40% of the water used for home and agricultural purposes in the United States, is a result of longer and more severe droughts. However, the availability of these resources in the future is threatened by widespread groundwater extraction during droughts. The National Integrated Drought Information System states that during dry spells, agricultural dependence on groundwater rises significantly, escalating supply threats and depletion.

Economic Consequences of Persistent Dry Conditions

The economy has also been impacted by the drought, particularly in states that depend significantly on agriculture. A prolonged drought in 2022 cost California, a state whose economy depends heavily on agriculture, $1.7 billion in crop earnings. Further lowering river water levels due to dry conditions hinders ports and waterway-based transportation, which limits capacity and cargo routes and raises shipping prices. Eventually, consumers pay more for goods, groceries, and other things as a result of these additional expenses.

As drought sweeps across almost every US State, Dr. Luo states, “Droughts impact various sectors—water resources, agriculture, transportation—resulting in economic challenges.” Consistent precipitation is necessary to mitigate these pervasive problems, but obtaining it is not simple.
