As climate change speeds up glacier melt, the Himalayas—often called the ‘Third Pole’ because of their vast frozen reserves—are rapidly changing, endangering the water security of around two billion South Asian people. The United Nations designated 2025 the International Year of Glaciers in recognition of glaciers’ vital role, with the goal of increasing global awareness and promoting immediate action. March 21 is officially recognized as World Day for Glaciers. Using NASA satellite data from 2000 to 2023, a recent study by Climatic Trends titled Impact of Black Carbon on Himalayan Glaciers: A 23-Year Trends Analysis highlights the concerning impact that Himalayan glaciers melting faster due to black carbon, a potent climatic pollutant, is playing in escalating this issue. Water supply, flood hazards, and regional stability are all significantly impacted by the retreat of glaciers, necessitating quick action to reduce emissions and save these critical ecosystems.

Black Carbon’s Role in Accelerating Glacier Melt

One of the leading causes of air pollution, black carbon is a transient climatic pollutant that significantly impacts global warming. According to the Climate Trends study, the Himalayan region’s black carbon concentrations increased dramatically between 2000 and 2019 before levelling off between 2019 and 2023, perhaps due to a plateau in emissions or changing atmospheric circumstances. By absorbing solar radiation, this pollutant—produced mainly by burning biomass, fossil fuels, and open fires—raises the temperature of the snow surface and speeds up melting. According to the study, average surface temperatures in the Himalayan snow peaks have risen by more than 4°C in just two decades, from -11.27°C (2000–2009) to -7.13°C (2020–2023), with a mean increase of -8.57°C over 23 years. Himalayan glaciers melt faster due to black carbon deposition because these regions experience more temperature spikes and less snow depth. In particular, the Eastern Himalayas, where black carbon levels are highest due to proximity to densely populated, biomass-burning regions, are at greater risk of floods and droughts as a result of this accelerated glacier melt, according to lead author Dr. Palak Baliyan.

Sources of Black Carbon Emissions in South Asia

Along with eastern states like West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Assam, where burning biomass for cooking and heating is common, the Indo-Gangetic Plains, which include states like Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, are a key hotspot for black carbon emissions. According to supporting research, 42% of black carbon depositions in India are caused by burning biofuels, 33% by open burning, and 25% by burning fossil fuels. Additionally, between 1998 and 2009, it was found that 25 to 45 percent of India’s annual fires were caused by biomass burning in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Burning crop leftovers and using open cookstoves are two examples of these practices that generate black carbon, which darkens the surface of Himalayan glaciers and decreases their albedo, or capacity to reflect sunlight. More heat absorption results from this, hastening the melt even more. To solve a persistent regional problem, Aarti Khosla, director of Climate Trends, highlights that focussing on these daily sources through policy interventions in the Indo-Gangetic Plains could immediately positively affect the climate and air quality.

Broader Implications of Glacier Loss

Himalayan glaciers are melting faster due to black carbon, and the effects of the melting Himalayan glaciers go well beyond the mountains. Speaking at the India Heat Summit 2025 in Delhi, Dr. Farooq Azam, a leading cryosphere specialist at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development in Nepal, called 2022 the worst year for the global balance of glacier mass. Because low-albedo ice absorbs more solar radiation, early heatwaves exposed Himalayan glaciers like Chhota Shigri in Himachal Pradesh, causing them to lose up to two meters of ice that year. Glacial mass loss has been four times greater than average since 2022; this pattern is also seen in places like Switzerland and Austria. The Himalayan area saw temperature increases greater than the global average in 2024, and global temperatures surpassed the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels. As a result, glaciers are getting smaller, river water is becoming more contaminated with heavy metals, and rivers like the Brahmaputra have surpassed their peak water levels. The recent May 28, 2025, collapse of the Birch Glacier in the Alps highlights the increasing potential of climate-driven disasters in the Himalayas and beyond and serves as a sobering warning of the destabilization brought on by climate change.

Urgent Action Needed to Mitigate the Crisis

Experts concur that cutting back on black carbon emissions provides a practical and quick way to prevent glacier melt and protect water supplies. It is a “quick win for climate health,” according to Professor Anjal Prakash, research director at the Indian School of Business’s Bharti Institute of Public Policy and a principal author of a report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In critical areas like the Indo-Gangetic Plains, policies that target open cookstoves, crop burning, and transportation emissions might drastically reduce black carbon levels, improving air quality and delaying the retreat of glaciers. Since the effects of glacier decline ripple downstream for billions of people, affecting everything from agriculture to the supply of drinking water, international cooperation is also essential. Although the window for action is closing, the UN’s designation of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers offers a global platform to support these initiatives. The disappearing ice giants in the Himalayas will keep melting if nothing is done, endangering ecosystems, water security, and the livelihoods of vulnerable communities throughout South Asia. Addressing climate change and reducing black carbon requires urgent, not just needed, collective action.
