According to a revolutionary study published in the journal Science, the rate at which glaciers are melting globally is alarmingly higher than previously predicted. Only 24% of ice may survive as warming accelerates and current climate policies result in a 2.7°C temperature increase beyond pre-industrial levels, according to a study released during the first United Nations conference on glaciers in Tajikistan. However,keeping the temperature at 1.5°C, the ambitious goal set by the Paris Agreement, could protect 54% of the 2020 glacier mass and conserve more than twice as much ice. The study, which 21 experts from 10 countries carried out, simulates the destiny of over 200,000 glaciers using eight glacier models. It emphasises the critical need for international action to slow down climate change and safeguard vulnerable areas that rely on water systems fed by glaciers.
Stark Projections: Only 24% of Ice May Survive as Warming Accelerates
The study’s results present a sobering picture of the demise of glaciers under different warming scenarios. Because ice responds slowly to climate change, glaciers are already committed to losing 39% of their 2020 ice mass over the next several centuries, even if global temperatures stabilise at their current levels. But when the temperature increases, the trajectory gets much worse. Only 24% of ice may survive as warming accelerates at 2.7°C, which aligns with existing global climate targets. On the other hand, 54% of that ice would be preserved if the 1.5°C objective were met, a difference that might be crucial for ecosystems and populations worldwide.
The differences are considerably more concerning at the regional level. With estimates indicating a 90% decline with merely 2°C of warming, the European Alps, Iceland, and the Western Rockies of North America are facing almost complete ice loss. In the same scenario, all of Scandinavia’s glaciers may disappear. Just 25% of the 2020 glacier mass in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, which is frequently referred to as the “Third Pole” because of its enormous ice reserves, would survive at 2°C, whereas 40–45% would at 1.5°C. Over two billion people in Asia depend on rivers like the Ganges, Indus, and Yangtze, which are fed by the glaciers in this area. Another crucial location, Central Asia, would only keep 30% of its glacier ice at 2°C, but 60% if warming is kept to 1.5°C. These numbers highlight how glacier retreat affects millions of people’s access to water, agriculture, and hydropower.

The Human Cost: Endangering Ecosystems and Livelihoods
Especially in Asia, where glacier-fed rivers are vital for food and water security, the melting of glaciers threatens the existence of billions of people. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) highlighted the scope of the situation during the UN conference in Dushanbe, which delegates from more than 50 nations attended. Vice-President of the Asian Development Bank, Yingming Yang, stated that over two billion people in Asia are at risk due to increasing sea levels, droughts, and floods brought on by the retreat of glaciers. Regional vulnerabilities are exacerbated by the serious threat to Central Asia’s glaciers, which sustain millions of people along the historic Silk Road route from Pakistan to China.
The situation has already reached a tipping point in the tropics. While Indonesia’s “Infinity Glacier” is expected to disappear in two years, Venezuela has lost its last glacier. Glaciers in Slovenia and Germany have also vanished recently, indicating a larger pattern of irreversible loss. Since glaciers are essential markers of climate change, their disappearance is not just a loss of natural heritage but also a warning sign of a larger environmental collapse. “The situation for glaciers is far worse than visible in the mountains today,” noted co-lead author Dr. Lilian Schuster of the University of Innsbruck, highlighting the ice’s slow but unavoidable reaction to warming.
Glacier Loss Science: A Slow but Unavoidable Decline
According to the study, glacier retreat is a gradual process lasting centuries, even after temperatures level off. This is because ice melts slowly, first quickly as temperatures rise in the upcoming decades and then more slowly when glaciers recede to higher elevations in search of a new equilibrium. By simulating the long-term fate of glaciers using sophisticated modelling, the study demonstrated that while the slower decline will burden future generations, the initial rapid melt will alter water systems and landscapes within our lifetimes. As co-lead author Harry Zekollari of Vrije Universiteit Brussel noted, the stakes were high: “Every fraction of a degree matters.” The decisions we make now will impact millennia to come, affecting the amount of our glaciers that can be saved.
Even if emissions are drastically reduced immediately, the entire effect of glacier loss might not become evident for decades, making mitigation measures more difficult. However, the study demonstrates that there is still time to make a significant impact by taking action to reduce warming. According to specialists at the Dushanbe conference, the best strategy to delay glacial melt is to switch to clean energy to reduce emissions that cause global warming. Addressing the immediate effects of glacial retreat also requires raising funds for areas at risk to adjust to changing circumstances, such as creating robust water management systems.

A Call to Action: Global Cooperation and Urgency
Scientists and decision-makers united for immediate action at the UN summit in Tajikistan. More substantial international commitments to the Paris Agreement targets are required, as evidenced by the striking difference between the 1.5°C and 2.7°C scenarios. The 1.5°C target is still attainable, but it calls for quick decarbonisation, a move away from fossil fuels, and adaptation spending in the areas that will be most impacted. With declining freshwater supplies affecting billions of people and increasing sea levels endangering coastal communities globally, melting glaciers are not only a regional problem but a global one.
The study’s message was magnified, and the glacier crisis gained international attention when released during the Dushanbe conference. To prevent the most vulnerable groups, especially those in Asia and the Pacific, from being left to suffer the most from climate change alone, policymakers were advised to give equal weight to mitigation and adaptation measures. The window for preserving glaciers is closing as they continue to melt; thus, taking urgent action is not only required but also morally required for the survival of future generations and the ecosystems on which they depend.
