Google announces 5 new sustainability initiatives in India as the technology giant expands its climate and clean-energy efforts across agriculture, renewable power, climate research and green technology. Announced on September 10, 2026, the initiatives use AI, geospatial data and infrastructure investments to address practical environmental challenges.
The measures include solar intelligence covering 300 million Indian rooftops, a 150-MW solar project in Rajasthan, a methane and water-reduction programme expected to reach tens of thousands of rice farmers in Telangana, two new research areas under the Google Center for Climate Technology, and support for four Indian climate-tech startups through Google DeepMind’s AI for the Planet accelerator.
AI to Accelerate Rooftop Solar Adoption
Google is expanding its Solar API, part of Earth AI, to provide solar potential insights for more than 300 million rooftops across India and over 1.2 billion buildings globally.
The technology allows solar installers to assess rooftop conditions without an initial physical site visit. Google says this can reduce the time and cost involved in preparing solar designs and proposals. Solar Ladder and OpenSolar are among platforms already integrating Solar API data into their workflows.

150 MW Solar Project and Rice-Farming Initiative
Google has signed a long-term agreement with ReNew Power for a 150-MW solar generation project in Rajasthan. Google will receive the environmental attributes associated with the electricity generated and use them to address electricity-related emissions across its value chain. Together with an earlier project, Google’s two Scope 3-focused solar projects in India are expected to add 300 MW of new solar generation capacity.
At the same time, Google is partnering with Mitti Labs to help smallholder rice farmers in Telangana adopt Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD). The approach periodically drains and refloods rice fields instead of keeping them continuously flooded, reducing methane formation and irrigation demand.

The rice project aims for nearly 3 million tonnes of CO2e in near-term warming impact, measured using GWP20, equivalent to 1 million tonnes under the conventional GWP100 measure. NASA-enabled satellite monitoring and field networks will be used to verify results.

Climate Research and Startup Support Expand
Google is also expanding the Google Center for Climate Technology, launched in February with India’s Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser. After receiving 77 applications, the Center selected three inaugural projects focused on green workforce training and low-carbon construction materials.
Its two new research areas are water stewardship and waste and circularity, including research into e-waste and battery recycling. Separately, Google DeepMind’s AI for the Planet accelerator has selected four Indian startups, Terrastack, Varaha Climate, Farmers for Forests and Climitra Carbon, working on areas including regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, biodiversity and biochar.

What Google’s India Push Signals
Google announces 5 new sustainability initiatives in India, showing a broader approach than renewable-energy procurement alone. The projects combine AI and satellite intelligence with clean-energy generation, agricultural methane reduction, water conservation, research funding and startup support.
The initiatives also place greater emphasis on solutions that can operate at scale, from assessing hundreds of millions of rooftops to working with thousands of farmers and supporting emerging climate-technology companies.
