Global oceans break June heat record as average sea surface temperatures reached an unusual 20.98°C in June 2026, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Marine Service. The new record surpasses the previous June highs recorded in 2023 and 2024, marking another alarming milestone in the accelerating climate crisis. Scientists attribute the exceptional ocean warming to the combined effects of human-induced climate change and the developing El Niño weather pattern, warning that even higher temperatures may occur in the coming months.

Oceans absorb nearly 90% of the excess heat generated by greenhouse gas emissions, making them one of the clearest indicators of global warming. The latest Copernicus data shows that June 2026 recorded the highest global average sea surface temperature ever observed for the month.

Although the average sea surface temperature during the first six months of 2026 reached 20.04°C, slightly below the record first-half average set in 2024, June alone established a new record, capping six months of exceptionally warm ocean conditions.

El Niño Could Push Temperatures Even Higher

Scientists say the developing El Niño event is likely to amplify already elevated ocean temperatures through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027.

El Niño occurs when unusually warm waters develop across the equatorial Pacific Ocean, releasing additional heat into the atmosphere and altering global weather patterns. The phenomenon is known to increase the likelihood of floods in some regions, droughts in others, and more frequent heatwaves worldwide.

According to Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, current conditions suggest the world may be entering another period of unusual warming.

With ocean temperatures already at record levels and El Niño strengthening, researchers expect additional climate records to fall in the coming months.

Marine Heatwaves Are Becoming More Widespread

  • The report found that 82% of the world’s oceans experienced marine heatwaves during the first half of 2026 the second-largest extent ever recorded after 2024.
  • The Mediterranean Sea experienced particularly severe warming, recording an average temperature of 24.3°C, the highest June value on record.
  • Nearly 98% of the Mediterranean basin was affected by marine heatwaves during the first six months of the year.
  • Meanwhile, the tropical Pacific reached 27.26°C, matching some of the warmest conditions ever observed and reinforcing expectations that El Niño will continue strengthening.

UN Warns Oceans Face a “Deepening Crisis”

The latest findings follow a recent United Nations scientific assessment, which warned that the world’s oceans are entering a “deepening crisis.” The report concluded that oceans are warming and rising faster than previously projected, increasing risks for biodiversity, food security, and coastal infrastructure.

Scientists emphasize that while El Niño is contributing to current warming, the long-term driver remains the continued accumulation of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels. According to Copernicus oceanographer Simon Van Gennip, 2026 is now expected to rank among the warmest years ever recorded because natural climate variability is reinforcing an already warming planet.
