The first green hydrogen plant in Finland has begun commercial operations at the Harjavalta production facility, marking a major milestone for the country’s hydrogen economy. Operated by P2X Solutions, a pioneer in Finland’s green hydrogen industry, the plant has a 20 MW production capacity and is among the first in Europe. Additionally, it has a methanation plant that will eventually start up.

Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions, said the Harjavalta plant’s opening marks a significant milestone in bringing Finland’s green hydrogen economy from concept to reality. He praised his team for achieving this goal and underlined Finland’s potential to lead the world in electric fuels and clean hydrogen. He added that he hoped many more initiatives would come after this.

Navigating Market Challenges and Future Expansion

P2X Solutions has proceeded with a strategy centered on steady scaling. At the same time, numerous European firms, including Repsol, BP, and Norsk Hydro, have postponed or terminated green hydrogen projects because of high costs and regulatory obstacles. As the first green hydrogen plant in Finland, the company’s Harjavalta facility stands out as one of the first businesses in Europe to start production at this level, according to Plit. He clarified that beginning at a smaller facility makes it easier to secure clients and grow operations if demand increases.

Two further hydrogen production plants with capacities of 40 MW in Joensuu and 100 MW in Oulu are to be constructed in Finland by P2X Solutions. The Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment awarded the company a 26-million-euro investment grant, and the Finnish Climate Fund provided a capital loan of 10 million euros.

Plit also noted that the Harjavalta plant’s investment decision was made before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which slowed down the shift to sustainable energy by increasing demand for fossil fuels and causing skyrocketing prices.

The Role of Green Hydrogen in a Low-Carbon Future

Green hydrogen is essential for cutting emissions since it can replace fossil fuels. The need for green hydrogen is anticipated to increase in the coming years due to new rules that target emissions in industrial production, air and maritime traffic, and other areas.

Plit said that since the transition will take time, businesses should embrace electric and green hydrogen fuels before laws requiring them are passed. Early action would give a competitive edge and ensure access to emission-free energy in the 2030s, he emphasized.

Speaking about recent changes in U.S. policy, he saw the suspension of some Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding for sustainable technologies as a potential chance for Europe to become more competitive in the market.
