Environmental CSR spending by Indian companies has crossed ₹17,377 crore over the last decade, reflecting a growing corporate focus on sustainability even as investments remain far below what is needed to address India’s climate challenges. According to the report A Decade of Green Spending by Bengaluru-based Sattva Consulting, environmental initiatives accounted for 8.4% of total Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending during the period. While funding has steadily recovered from a pandemic low of 4.4%, it still trails sectors such as health and education.
The report estimates that India will require around $2.5 trillion by 2030 to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and nearly $10 trillion by 2047 to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat and the country’s Net Zero 2070 target. Against this backdrop, the report argues that corporate CSR funding can play a much larger role in accelerating India’s climate transition.

Green CSR Funding Concentrated in a Few Priority Areas
The report analyzed high-value CSR projects worth over ₹50 lakh during FY 2023-24 and found that funding remained heavily concentrated in a few traditional environmental sectors.
Nearly 38% of all high-value environmental CSR funding was directed toward:
- Water management (15%)
- Renewable energy (12%)
- Biodiversity and plantation activities (11%)
These investments have been supported by growing demand for renewable energy, electric vehicles, climate-resilient agriculture, water conservation, and disaster preparedness across the country.
However, the report noted that most CSR portfolios continue to favor small-scale, multi-location projects instead of large, long-term landscape or ecosystem restoration initiatives.

Environmental CSR Spending by Indian Companies Remains Uneven
Despite increasing investments, the report highlights significant disparities in how funds are distributed.
- Only 22% of companies currently allocate CSR funds specifically to environmental initiatives.
- Participation rises sharply among larger corporations, with nearly all of the biggest companies investing in green projects.
- In fact, just 68 companies account for more than 40% of India’s total environmental CSR spending, indicating that sustainability investments remain concentrated among a relatively small group of large contributors.
- Interestingly, while smaller companies contribute lower overall amounts, they often dedicate a higher proportion of their CSR budgets to environmental causes.
- Among India’s 4,792 largest companies, European-headquartered multinational corporations showed the highest participation rate in environmental CSR at approximately two-thirds, compared with 54% among Indian firms.

Climate-Vulnerable Regions Continue to Receive Limited Support
One of the report’s most striking findings is the mismatch between climate risks and CSR investments.
Among India’s 50 most climate-vulnerable districts, 30 districts received just 1% of total environmental CSR spending over the past three years, amounting to only ₹106 crore.
Similarly, air quality, despite being one of India’s most pressing public health concerns, attracted just ₹14 crore, or roughly 5% of high-value environmental CSR funding.
The report suggests that future CSR strategies should focus more on place-based climate adaptation, targeting regions facing severe risks from droughts, floods, heatwaves, and environmental degradation.

A Growing Opportunity for Corporate Climate Leadership
As India accelerates its clean energy transition and climate commitments, environmental CSR is emerging as an important source of complementary financing. While environmental CSR spending by Indian companies has grown steadily over the past decade, experts believe a stronger focus on climate-resilient infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, air quality improvement, and support for vulnerable communities could significantly enhance its impact. With ambitious national sustainability goals ahead, corporate investments have the potential to become a key driver of India’s green development journey.
