As of Tuesday night, Cyclone Montha caused $603 million in damages as it ripped over coastal Andhra Pradesh, uprooting trees, damaging buildings, and drowning agricultural grounds. Many places lost electricity as a result of utility poles being brought down by the storm’s powerful winds. According to preliminary official estimates, the agriculture sector suffered the largest losses, totaling 8.68 billion rupees, as vegetable harvests, banana plantations, and paddy fields were damaged across large areas.
Key highlights of the damage include:
- Farm Losses: Considered to be in excess of 8.68 billion rupees, with substantial damage to crops and livestock.
- Impact on Infrastructure: Transportation and rescue operations were hampered by significant blockages in roads, bridges, and drainage systems.
- Animal Casualties: Although human casualties were mainly prevented, the authorities stated that 120 animals were killed.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said that although local media reported two deaths involving ladies trapped in floodwaters, no official human deaths had been registered. The administration stressed that quick evacuations prevented a significant number of fatalities.

Relief Operations and Ongoing Challenges
News organizations captured images of residents swimming through knee-deep water, collecting their belongings, and looking for higher ground following the storm. Rescue teams, particularly the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), worked tirelessly to assist stranded families. Relief items, such as food packs, drinking water, and medical equipment, were dispersed in the most impacted districts.
Neighboring Telangana also had heavy rainfall, which resulted in floods in a number of districts. Officials kept an eye on the water levels there and cautioned locals living in low-lying regions. The impacted areas would receive some respite when Cyclone Montha dissipated into a low-pressure system over the course of a day, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Experts caution that the eastern coast of India experiences cyclones from April to December each year, underscoring the need for improved disaster planning and coastal infrastructure. The 1999 Odisha super cyclone, which claimed around 10,000 lives, was used as a historical example to show how disaster response techniques have changed over time.
Cyclone Montha causes $603 million in damages and serves as a stark reminder of India’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Rebuilding resilient infrastructure and assisting impacted farmers will be essential to reducing future losses as Andhra Pradesh embarks on its protracted recovery.
