Coral reef cover falls by 9.5% worldwide when the latest four-year average is compared with the 1980-2009 reference period, according to the Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025 report. Global hard coral cover averaged 30.2% during the reference period but dropped to 27.3% between 2020 and 2024. The decline became particularly severe in 2024, when hard coral cover fell to an estimated 25.8%, following an 8.9% drop from 2023, the largest single-year decline recorded.
The report, released by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), draws on an enormous dataset covering more than four decades. Researchers analysed 21.1 million observations from 87,299 surveys across 36,886 sites in 124 countries and territories, making it one of the broadest assessments of coral reef health to date.
Repeated Bleaching Is Leaving Less Time for Recovery
The study identifies four major global coral bleaching events since 1998, with each followed by a significant reduction in hard coral cover. The concern is not only the size of each loss but the shrinking gap between successive heatwaves.

Historically, reefs in many regions had around a decade to recover after major bleaching events. That recovery period has now shortened to approximately five to six years, according to the report. Global hard coral cover has not returned to its 1980-2009 reference level since 2010, despite a roughly 6% relative recovery following the third global bleaching event.
Manuel González Rivero, lead author of the report, said the shrinking recovery window is more concerning than the current loss itself.

Some Regions Are Recovering While Others Decline Sharply
The coral reef cover falls by 9.5% worldwide, and these figures conceal major differences between regions. The western Indian Ocean recorded a 31% increase in hard coral cover during 2020-2024 compared with the reference period, while South Asia recorded a 16.2% increase.
Other regions experienced much steeper losses. Hard coral cover declined by 48.7% in the ROPME Sea area, 43.3% in the Caribbean and 18.3% across the Pacific.
These differences demonstrate that local conditions still influence how reefs respond to global warming.

Why Coral Reef Loss Matters
Coral reefs occupy less than 0.2% of the ocean floor, yet they support at least 25% of marine species. Their importance extends to people as well. Nearly one billion people depend on reefs directly or indirectly for food security, livelihoods, tourism, coastal protection and cultural heritage.
The report’s findings point to a two-part challenge. Global greenhouse gas emissions need to fall rapidly enough to reduce the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves, while local conservation efforts must address pollution, overfishing and development pressures.
As Rivero put it, reefs once had decades between major disturbances. In many places, they now have only a few years. The latest data suggest that protecting that increasingly narrow recovery window may be just as important as measuring how much coral has already been lost.
