The Colombia landslide in northwest Antioquia on Tuesday claimed at least 10 lives and wounded 15, according to the governor of Antioquia province. The slide occurred between Medellín and the municipality of Bello. The landslide’s force washed away a portion of the hillside, trapping people on the road and in nearby homes. The 15 injured were transported to hospitals for treatment after medical personnel arrived. Rescue operations are actively underway as authorities continue to search for additional victims.

Emergency Response Underway

In a post on X, Governor Andres Julian stated that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing. Rescue personnel have been navigating hazardous terrain and using excavation equipment to locate survivors. The governor indicated that the collapse was likely caused by heavy rainfall in the region. He confirmed that shelters for displaced residents have been activated and emergency responders are on the ground. Governor Andrés Julián Rendón urged locals to avoid the Colombia landslide zone to reduce further danger and allow crews to work safely.

Weather Warnings and Past Incidents

Heavy rains swept across Antioquia and caused instability in mountainous areas, triggering the landslide. Governor Andrés Julián Rendón advised residents to move to shelters, warning that the risk remains severe. Similar events have occurred recently. On May 8, following intense rain, a landslide in Sabaneta, south of Medellín, killed five people and left two missing. Authorities have placed nearby communities on alert and continue to monitor conditions closely.

The combination of steep terrain and heavy rainfall creates conditions conducive to landslides, posing significant risks to communities in the affected areas.

As rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on locating any survivors and providing assistance to those impacted by this tragic event.
