The Ministry of Ecology and Environment unveiled Thursday’s new policies to lower the amount of this potent greenhouse gas released during coal mining. In contrast to carbon dioxide, which may stay in the atmosphere for up to a thousand years, methane only lasts for roughly ten years while being significantly more potent at trapping heat. Because of this short time horizon, reducing methane emissions can have immediate and significant climate benefits.

Over 150 nations have committed to reducing methane emissions by 30% by 2030. China, the biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world, has not yet set a particular goal, but last year, it pledged to strengthen mine methane absorption and impose more stringent regulations on garbage management and livestock husbandry.

According to the revised rules, miners that release large concentrations of methane—defined as those that release more than 10 cubic meters of pure methane per minute and a methane concentration of 8% or more—must trap the gas. The trapped methane must be destroyed if it can’t be utilized as a resource. The previous criterion of 30%, which was put in place in 2008 mainly to encourage coalbed methane as an alternative fuel source and prevent mine explosions, has been significantly tightened.

The age of the mines determines the compliance timetable. Existing mines have until April 2027 to adopt the adjustments, whereas newly built mines must comply by April 2025. It is anticipated that these actions will slow down the rate of global warming, make better use of energy resources, and promote workplace safety by lowering the number of accidents.

With over 3,000 mines, China’s coal industry significantly contributes to methane emissions, making up around 40% of the nation’s total methane production. A comparable portion comes from the agricultural sector. Even though China is still a significant coal producer worldwide, these new regulations demonstrate its dedication to limiting the negative environmental effects of its massive coal mining operations.

Global Consequences and Satellite Monitoring’s Function

China’s statement coincides with increased global attention paid to methane emissions from the energy industry. Satellites have identified 23 massive methane plumes from coal mines in nations like China, Australia, Colombia, and Mexico between January 2023 and April 2024, according to research from the Global Energy Monitor released on Thursday. This discovery emphasizes how vital technology is for tracking and resolving gas leaks. China shows that it is prepared to take a more aggressive approach to reducing methane emissions by implementing these strict regulations. If successfully carried out, these actions open the door for a more extensive pledge to methane reduction goals, bringing China into line with international climate objectives.
