According to research by the European Commission, chemical pollution worsens the European water crisis as chemicals remain the primary source of contamination in surface water bodies across the continent. Only 39.5% of EU surface water bodies, including rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways, were in good ecological condition as of 2021. Only 26.8% of these water bodies met the requirements, down from 33.5% in 2015, indicating a substantial deterioration in their chemical quality.
The research pointed out that although there have been some slight improvements in the general health of water bodies, these have not been sufficient to reverse the deteriorating conditions. The main cause of surface water depletion is still climate change, which is made worse by industrial pollution, urbanization, and agricultural practices. Future water security in Europe is a concern due to the mounting strain on water resources.
Agricultural and Industrial Contamination
The study indicated that agricultural pollution, especially excessive nitrate and pesticide use, has a major impact on water quality. Contamination with nitrates from farming is still a problem, even though groundwater has been somewhat less affected than surface water bodies. According to the European Commission, nitrate—a significant ingredient in fertilizers—has led to the deterioration of chemical water quality and is still politically challenging to control.
Another major factor is industrial pollution, which damages water bodies through chemicals from manufacturing, medications, and urban runoff. Even though the EU has banned a number of dangerous pollutants, heavy metals, microplastics, and persistent toxic chemicals like mercury still pose serious dangers, further illustrating how chemical pollution worsens the European water crisis by continuously degrading water quality.
Jessika Roswall, the EU Environment Commissioner, said that Europe has long taken water for granted and that the situation in the EU is worsening. She emphasized that a shift in mindset is needed to handle the situation.

Political and Policy Challenges in Water Management
Resolving the escalating water crisis has proven politically difficult. According to the research, several environmental safeguards were weakened last year as a result of European farmers using their political clout to oppose specific Commission policies. Because of their detrimental effects on water quality, the courts have previously ordered the Netherlands to significantly reduce nitrogen pollution.
EU nations are legally obligated to preserve and improve aquatic ecosystems under the Water Framework Directive (WFD), with the goal of achieving “good ecological status” for all surface water by 2027. The majority of nations, according to the research, are unlikely to reach this goal, which could have legal repercussions.
In the upcoming budget, the EU intends to allocate more money for water cleanup initiatives. The research did, however, caution that conflicting objectives, such as higher defense and industrial spending, may constrain the money available for water restoration projects. The European Commission emphasized that immediate action is necessary since the combined risks of pollution, climate change, and unsustainable water usage are straining Europe’s freshwater resources.
