The North Pole temperatures soared 20°C above average this month, surpassing the melting point of ice. According to models from U.S. and European weather organizations, temperatures north of Svalbard in Norway had already increased by 18°C earlier on Saturday. By Sunday, actual temperatures were close to 0°C, and this temperature anomaly had risen above 20°C.

North Pole Temperatures Soared 20°C Above Average

Although not necessarily the most severe on record, a scientist from the Finnish Meteorological Institute classified the occurrence as an extreme case of winter warming in the Arctic. Nonetheless, warming remained an event near the upper range of the region’s potential. Since 1979, the Arctic has warmed almost four times faster than the global average, and extreme heat events have become more frequent and intense.

Contributing Factors and Climatic Implications

A substantial flow of warm air toward the North Pole was facilitated by a deep, low-pressure area over Iceland, which was blamed for the warming. According to a scientist at the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, abnormally warm seas in the northeastern Atlantic contributed to the exceptional temperatures in the Arctic winter’s depths. The Arctic’s wind-driven warming was further amplified by these oceanic conditions.

Sunday’s daily average temperatures were over 20°C higher than usual in the vicinity of the North Pole, according to Copernicus data, with absolute temperatures reaching -1°C as far north as 87°N. On the same day, an Arctic snow buoy recorded absolute temperatures of 0.5°C, providing further confirmation. By examining billions of weather readings from satellites, ships, aeroplanes, and weather stations, climate scientists can calculate global temperatures. However, determining the exact anomaly is still difficult in the central Arctic due to the lack of direct observational data. Model forecasts regularly showed a temperature anomaly of more than 20°C, with estimates ranging from 20°C to 30°C, according to Finnish meteorologists.

Consequences for Arctic Ice and Future Projections

The North Pole temperatures soared 20°C above average, underscoring the accelerating impacts of climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme warming events in the Arctic. A University of Hamburg climate scientist stressed that ice loss will continue as temperatures rise. He pointed out that this process is unavoidable and irreversible, given the current warming trends.

The same researcher coauthored a study in 2023 that found that even with large cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, Arctic summer sea ice will continue to decrease. Forecasts suggest that within the next 20 years, the Arctic Ocean will have its first summer without any ice at all. According to the researcher, this would be the first time that human action has caused a landscape to vanish, underscoring the magnitude of humanity’s contribution to the planet’s climate.
