People living along the coast in Veracruz, Mexico, are facing a real mess, as beach oil contamination in Veracruz has started washing up on their beaches, and in villages, families count on fishing and tourism to get by, but now both are on hold, and locals are worried the oil will reach the nearby lagoons, where they farm shrimp and fish, which will hit their food supply and wallets. In October 2025, 2.7 million liters of oil were extracted from the Pantepec River following a pipeline spill in the state of Veracruz.

Beach Oil Contamination in Veracruz

What Triggered the Oil Spill Along Veracruz Beaches?

According to the woman fisherman, Aurora Apolonia Martinez, she noticed that when she cast her fishing net into the water, it came back coated with oil, rendering it unusable.

  • Initial Discovery by Fishermen: The fishermen were the first to notice the contamination when their fishing nets came back coated with crude oil during their fishing activities in the region.
  • Multiple Spill Sites Identified: According to the environmental group Cemda, over a dozen sites of oil contamination have been noticed since March 1 at various locations in the states of Veracruz and Tabasco.
  • Unclear Source of the Spill: The exact source of the spill remains unknown, which has raised many questions in the minds of the people about the contribution of offshore drilling, pipelines, and tankers to the spill.
  • Cleanup Led by Local Residents: The people of Jicacal and surrounding areas are working together to clean the tar and oil residue from the beach before the spill further contaminates the area.

How Does Oil Pollution Affect Local Livelihoods?

  • Damaged Commercial Fishing Gear: As commercial fishermen in these coastal communities have lost the use of their oil-filled nets for commercial fishing gear, many have been forced to cease operation or pay for replacing their damaged gear.
  • Concern About Aquaculture Production: Residents are concerned that the oil will contaminate lagoons located near the shoreline where fish and shrimp are being raised for food.
  • Decline in Tourist Traffic: Local tourism operators in these communities are experiencing less visitor traffic to their beaches, which also may cause them to have fewer customers at restaurants, boat charters, and hotels.
  • Economic Wellbeing: People living along the coast of Veracruz depend on fishing and tourism for their income; therefore, the impact of oil pollution will have a large negative effect on these industries and create high economic losses.

Could Oil Industry Activities Be Responsible for the Spill?

Most activities are carried out by the state-owned oil company, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), but they have denied the allegations of oil spillage in the current incident. However, environmental activists claim that the state has witnessed several oil-related incidents in the past few years.

According to experts, oil spills in such environments are long-lasting, considering that the heavy oil spills in the waters tend to form tar balls that gradually deteriorate over time. In the midst of the crisis, the people are focused on cleaning the beaches to prevent further environmental damage, an indication that the beach oil contamination in Veracruz is a crisis that could continue to pose a risk.
