According to a new study, the Antarctic Ice Sheet, which has the most potential to raise sea levels, may already be at or near a key melting tipping point. Scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (Germany), Northumbria University (UK), and NORCE Research (Norway) suggest that if this barrier is reached, the ice sheet may continue to melt even if global temperatures are stabilized or decreased. This finding reinforces concerns that the Antarctic ice sheet may hit an irreversible melting point, leading to long-term consequences for sea-level rise.
This behavior, known as hysteresis, suggests that the melting process no longer depends on the initial climatic trigger and is self-sustaining. In essence, reverse warming no longer stops the process as the system enters a feedback loop. The researchers verified hysteretic behavior in the Antarctic Ice Sheet using several sophisticated models.
Long-Term Models Show Irreversible Sea-Level Rise Risk
The researchers employed equilibrium and transient simulations from the Parallel Ice Sheet Model to better understand the long-term dynamics of Antarctic melting. Emphasizing the transitions among glacial and interglacial periods, these models replicated how the ice sheet responded to 800,000 years of historical natural warming and cooling cycles.
According to the research, after the West Antarctic Ice Sheet achieves its equilibrium state, even a slight increase in ocean temperatures, just 0.25°C, or even continued present warming levels, may eventually result in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet contributing 4 meters of sea-level rise. Even though it may take millennia or more to reach this ultimate form, this ultimate form represents how the ice sheet will finally settle in the current climate.
The scientists emphasized that because of the ice sheets’ naturally delayed reaction time, the four decades of satellite measurements now available are insufficient to fully understand the long-term speed and pattern.

Urgency to Act Despite Millennia-Long Recovery Timeline
Scientists cautioned that the globe will likely overshoot given the current climatic track. It would take countless years at or below pre-industrial temperatures for the Antarctic Ice Sheet to return to its current stability after the tipping point is crossed, which is an implausible scenario. The Antarctic Ice Sheet may hit an irreversible melting point and remain unstable for thousands of years.
The primary cause of the ice sheet’s destabilization is the warming of the Southern Ocean’s waters, not the heat from the atmosphere. Co-author Julius Garbe pointed out that immediate mitigation measures might still avert complete collapse despite the bleak forecast. He emphasized that although an ice sheet takes tens of thousands of years to form, destabilization brought on by emissions from fossil fuels may happen in a matter of decades.
