For those in the vicinity, the sight was both stunning and horrifying as a dense column of smoke dominated the sky. As the volcanic ash plume rose to a height of about 6,400 meters, the Toulouse-based Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, one of nine international centers keeping an eye on aviation hazards, issued a warning. Since ash may harm aeroplane engines and reduce vision, this poses a serious risk to air traffic. Due to the decreased activity as the eruption cooled, the threat level was downgraded from elevated to yellow by late Monday afternoon. Although the INGV declared that the eruptive episode was over, they kept an eye on the volcano in case of any aftershocks or new activity. Authorities advised locals to take measures after the little ash fell in places like Piano Vetore, which impacted local agriculture and air quality. This incident is part of Mount Etna’s trend of regular eruptions, which have occurred several times in recent years, frequently upsetting island life and as a reminder of the unstable geology of the area.
